Salt Block

Enjoy watching the deer as they feed at the apple tree.
Water is close by but out of sight of window.

Want to place a salt block out to enhance dinner.

Should I use plain, sulfer, mineral or apple flavored blocks?

Once they find it, will they still be attracted during the winter months?

.

I use a granulated salt w/trace minerals. I get it from the feed store. I put it on an old stump. The deer will literally chew the stump, and paw up the ground around it.
Others use a salt block, but around here if a bear finds it they will destroy it, or take it.
The deer use a salt lick in the spring mostly. But they will get used to coming close.

May want to check you local regs.
Where we live the warden frowns on that.
It's considered baiting.
We use rock salt and throw it on the ground, the rain soaks it into the ground where the warden can't find it but the deer just paw the ground to get at it;)

MN has some strict baiting laws, but salt licks are OK, as the deer use them mainly early in the year. This is believed to reduce car deer collisions as deer look for salt in road ditches in spring.

I would get a "sweet block" with or without wormer and a mineral block. Put them side by side against each other, when they run out of the sweet block they will work the mineral block...

I read an excellent suggestion on one of these posts. Put the salt in a gunny sack and hang it. The rain will cause it to drip and create a salt area, but the critters can't destroy your block.

I put salt blocks out every year. legal here. The deer tear the place apart from early spring until June/July and tapers off to no activity at all in Sept/Oct. Small creek nearby.

I believe the spring leaves, shoots (chutes?), new grass and stuff cause the deer to search for salt.

I think the salt/minerals promote antler growth also.

We try to put out at least 5 mineral blocks a year. The deer will go through a 50lb block in a year, maybe a little longer. Once a block is gone, we put another one in its place. Most of them are located away from stands, and only once did I see a small doe lick at a mineral block. The Trophy Rocks are pretty good. The ones I put out disappeared with a couple of months.

I have had the best luck with mineral blocks. Not only do they keep coming back time after time, but the block itself seems to last longer than the other types.

I know one thing they will eat is those mineral rocks. Last season I sat and watched 3 or 4 deer lick one of those.

If you aren't going to hunt 'em--just watch 'em--Deer CoCaine is quite a lure here in the South. So is yellow corn. Put a supplemental feeder alongside and you should see plenty.

I don't know about everywhere, but when I was stationed in Upsate NY, they passed a law (maybe just a local ordinance - little hazy now and didn't apply to me then...) against feeding the deer or putting things out to attract them - town was getting overrun with deer.

This had nothing to do with hunting, it was strictly for "deer watching".
