sales of Remington PSS limited

Saw reference to the above on another discussion, and had verification of same from a customer relations/customer service person, at Remington.

The lady, who sounded like she was reading from a script that she didn't really understand, stated something to the effect that the PSS was a "special rifle", custom shop item, that included, either horror of horrors or boundless joy and happiness, a "parkerized finish", which most certainly makes the thing more deadly than the proverbial ray gun or phaser. She also mentioned "special preperation", though she seemed rather less than speficic on this point. In any event, it struck me that she was saying that LE sales were more important to Remnington, than were sales to us unwashed civilians, though she didn't use those words.

Many years ago, I bought a 40X Rangmaster, which came with a factory target, 3 individual 5 shot groups at 100 yards, indoors said the paper. Averabe for 15 shots was 0.43". They even listed the load they used, which it turned out, worked very well, even at 600 yards.

I'm certain that everyone on this board knows what the 40X is/was, nothing mysterious there. I believe that these days, if it is still offered, it too is a Custom Shop item, though who knows? Perhaps it being a superbly accurate rifle, at least the older ones, circa 1972 were, it too has been withdrawn from sales to us unwashed, unannointed "civilians".

One wonders, if such is really the case, Remington too has subscribed to the SPECIAL PERSONS theory of sales transactions. One might also wonder as to what it might be that has caused one of the oldest of Ameroican manufacturing operations to fall to such a sad state. One also wonders as to whether or not the "movers and shakers" at Remington will see the results of their decisions, in the detoriation their bottom line?

It has to be a political issue. Remington is just trying to protect themselves from the attach from those anti's as an "evil gun manufacture" I own a PSS before and the only difference is the non-reflective finish and HS stock. It's simply a regular VS 223, 308, & 300 win

what Reminton might think

Spatula:

If Remoington thinks that essentially spitting in the face of their customers, is going to "protect" them from attacks by Antigunners, they need to send their crystal ball to the laundramat or dry cleaners.

Being a gun for "Law Enforcement Only" there certainly is no shortage of dealers who can get there hands on them or are willing to sell them to the general public. I bought one about 2 months ago from my local shop who just happened to have one lying in the back. This is a shop that does not deal with any of the so called "evil guns"(they just have mostly hunters that come in, as they are a camping store as well). I think remington is just trying to cover their behind.

NYS....:

What you say is likely correct.

As I personally see the thing, it is also beside the point. What is, in my hard headed, or thick headed view, whichever might be appropriate, is the mindset displayed by Remington management.

Do they really think that "giving the anti's something now" will, in the long run help them or us, rather than merely encouraging the other side to come back for MORE? It would have been really interesting to be the proverbial "fly on the wall" in the room where this decision was taken, I suspect..

Yes, That is just what Reminton does.......They think LE only will save them and so if they stopped selling to the public things marked PSS they look like good guys. What is the difference between the PSS and the 700 VS, about $150 and the stock.
I know of two dealers that will get me one in a heart beat and there NO LAW stating the average Joe can't own one.

But get what you want now, Things are changing every day with the school shooting and and other incedents

I own a 700PSS and when I went to purchase another one the guy at the "police" type store told me he couldn't sell it to me as a citizen. I said, "Gee, you already did sell me one before and isn't the Steyr SSG you sold me at least as good?" He shut up and sold me the second PSS. Another store here in Utah seems to always have them in stock no questions asked. PC BS.

Remington front office might say that but it's another situation where the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. There are many dealers and wholesalers that will sell you a 700P if you want one. Just look in Shotgun News. Some dealers feel they are more exclusive for being "LE only" and won't. If you want one just look around because they are there.

And believe me they don't come from the custom shop and if they are then the custom shop has alot of problems. Like was posted earlier they are just a VS with a differnet finish and stock. Personally I like the 700P stock better and that's the only reason I got one in 300WM as opposed to the Sendero. Perosnally you'ld be better off with a 40X and working up from there as far as customizing. It's a better action made to tighter tolerences.

If you're gonna spend that much cash on a rifle, go with a REAL custom shop rifle - Get a custom action and a match-grade barrel, and have a good benchrest tolerance gunsmith do the chambering.

Even Remington 40X rifles need a trip to the smith to ensure that they're square and true, and many also need to be rebarrelled.

Spend it once, cry once, have the best.

There's one shop in my area that sells them to anyone, and there's another shop that said that they can't even get them. The reason as explained to me by the shop that sells them is that they are a direct police distributor. Apparently, only Remington will wholesale PSSs and LTRs to police distributors. I quote Watch-Six on this one- "PC BS"

Whatever you do, DO NOT PURCHASE a Remington product on July 9, 2001 during the "Give the UN the Finger" celebration of firearms freedom.

Policies of "LEO only" are lawyer induced. Any prudent mfg would take heed to follow such a course. Realistically, they know that it's just the same product but with a different marking. Ruger does the same thing with their "marksman" rifle. It's just a varminter but with a grey-tone laminate stock instead of the wood tone laminate stock. As mentioned above, if Remington wanted to be prissy about it, the Varminter wouldn't be out there. BTW, I prefer the Varminter as the stock is more comfortable to carry. As for "parkerizing", that can be done at home over the kitchen stove (if you have a long enough stainless steel pan - do a search under my name and you'll find instructions on parkerizing).

Typical DRAK. Most of the PSS rifles I have sold from our store have been to deer hunters. It is the low priced "Beanfield" rifle.
The LTR is very popular for a "pickup" gun. The rest of them go to informal target shooters. I also sell a lot of Mil-dot scopes. I guess they'll be next so you cann't eyeball a target the wrong way :).

They aim of any company is to make money and stay in business. If this means being "PC" that is what they will do. Expect all of the mainstream companies to sell out the shooter to some degree. As long as it is legal we'll sell it to anyone that passes the test.

The Domino theory is alive and well in the gun industry.

Don't like it, Don't do it, Vote freedom.
