Trying to find out more about a rifle I got into via a trade. It has a black synthetic stock and fantastic blueing. I have added a Zeiss Conquest HD5 5-25 because it has high Sako rings and the reticle on the VXIII 4.5x14 is being shipped to Leupold for a German 4 reticle. What can you tell me about this gun.

No search engine?
The Sako M995 is also known as the TRG-S. It's a deer/antelope/varmint hunting rifle. Apparently it's no longer made.
14X is too much magnification for a .25-06.
Stole this from the Sako Collector's forum. Slightly edited.

"The Sako M995 TRG-S were sold as Hunter and Carbine models in certain calibers. I don't know exactly which, but the calibers sold were: 308 Win, 25-06 Rem, 6.5x55, 270 Win, 7x64, 280 Rem, 30-06, 9.3x62, 270 Wby Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm Wby Mag, 7mm STW, 7.21 Firebird, 300 Win Mag, 300 Wby Mag, 7.82 (.308) Warbird, 30-378 Wby Mag, 338 Win Mag, 340 Wby Mag, 375 H&H Mag, 416 Rem Mag, and. 338 Lapua Mag. The rarest are the 308 Win, 280 Rem and the 9.3x62."

If your Sako has a 22" barrel, like so many do, your ballistics will pretty much duplicate a 243. The 25-06 thrives on slow burning powders, and needs a 26" bbl. to really make it shine.

25-06 certainly justifies the Scope. That is a legitimate 600 yard cartridge (more if you want to go there though probably not the barrel for it).

Sako was known for their fine Finishes (pun)

Too much scope? Depends on who is behind it. I'm running a 5.5-22 Nightforce on one, and an 8-32 NF on another. People ask me how I get on those running varmints, but it is simple: get ready for a standing shot, since they almost always have to stop and see what is going on, if you aren't blasting away at them.

I Love the 25-06. I have one in a Winchester extreme weather model 70. Took three deer so far this season with the 25-06. I shoot 120gr Corelokts. Enjoy it. Mine has a 4.5 to 12 Meopta on it. German number 4 reticle. Go for it.

25-06 is a cult round, many folks either worship them as "bottled lightning bolts" or dismiss them as "not a 30-06/300 Win Mag/338 Win" (your choice). It can be a great cartridge, fast, flat shooting, but very limited appeal around many deer camps. But it sounds like you got a good rifle at a good price, so enjoy it!
