Sako extractor on Rem 700 ??

Are they more reliable? I've owned several 700's and have yet to have an extractor failure.

Ditto here. This is a 35+ design. If it was so potentially flawed, I think this modification would be standard for military applications, but it is not.

As in all things, there are proponents on each side, but I think compromising the bolt head with a cut, compromises the Remington "3 rings of steel" design, and effect gas control in a ruptured cartridge.

I asked this question of Mr Gale McMillan here on this board last year. He said that he had worked on somewhere between 4000 to 6000 Remington 700 rifles and had yet to see an extractor break. I will admit that everywhere you go there is someone willing to do this modification. Williams the peep sight company even does it for $75. I believe it is part of the I bought a Remington and wish I had a Mauser disease. For what it costs to modify a Model 700 you could buy a surplus Mauser.

The Sako style extractor is much more reliable than the Rem one, It is also stronger. Over the years of smithing, I have seen many failures of the 700 extractor. 6 yrs of that was warranty for Rem. That was the #1 repair on a 700 in that shop when I was there. I have had 3 failures on customers rifles this year.....Celt
