Saiga Shotgun Magazines

I was looking online at those Saiga Semi-auto shotguns. Pretty slick looking, and from what I have seen on here, they are pretty dependable(since they are based on an AK, I hope they are dependable).

Does anyone know if there are any magazine out there for them that hold more than 5 rounds? I know, a 12ga shell is pretty thick, but I would think someone could make a 10 or 15 round magazine for one of these. That would be pretty nifty. Might not reach out like a 223 or 308, but it would remove all thoughts of a pistol caliber carbine from my mind.

Kalashnikov-USA has 10rd mags for the Saiga .410 for 49.95 each.

I've also heard that you can find the 10 rounders for the .410 for sale in issues of the Shotgun News, but I don't have a copy handy to look through.

There are 7 round 12ga magazines for the Saiga 12, and few 10 rounders were supposedly made up as an option for LE testing/sales. Available to LE only, unfortunately.
A 15 round magazine would be obscenely long, heavy, and is likely to be unreliable for numerous. You'd have a magazine spring pushing up 15 shells that weigh 2 ozs a piece, plus the follower, with enough tension to feed them up fast enough to be caught by the reciprocating bolt, yet not so strong that it crushes the plastic hulls, deforms the feed lips, or has the top cartridge put so much upward pressure on the bolt that it impedes functioning. The shotgun magazines must be rather steeply curved to allow the rimmed shells to feed without snarling. No would I want to be stuck firing over an obstruction or prone with that big mag hanging down.

The other problem is that shotguns have different restrictions due to the assault weapon ban. The 5 rnd Saiga magazine is the largest detatchable magazine allowed for a semi-auto shotgun, regardless of its other "evil features". There is a conversion that allows the Saiga to have a traditional AK configuration w/ pistol grip, but it requires specially modified 5 rnd magazines that ONLY fit the converted Saiga, specifically circumvent any legal problems due to those 7 and 10 round LE only magazines.

Unless your an LEO, there are no 7+ round magazines available period. Saiga 12s have enough problems with the five round magazines. I've seen 3 that required the users to rock them in with the bolt held partially open.

hey Cthulhu Would you mind passing along where you found the info on the pistol gripped saiga 12 conversion, I remember soupbowl enterprises trying this some time and getting rejected, I would be quite interested in such a thing. thanks.

I was referring to the Soup Bowl Industries conversions for the Saiga .410 and 12ga, which can be seen at www.AK-47.net . The 1st prototypes were rejected because the magazines were not different enough to prevent easy conversion of LEO 7round magazines to fit his modified Saiga 12ga. The design was modified and resubmitted for approval, which is still pending.
