Saiga issue (.223)

Buddy of mine bough a saiga 223 version. Shooting brass PMC 55gr fmj's its beating up the casings badly. It dents in the neck, and give a nice scrape and dent in the case in the middle, and finally they show rubbing near the rim. This happens every time, on every shot. Whats causing this? My first guesses are extraction issue, or a gas issue of too much or too little? What your take?

The dent in the middle is almost surely the bolt or charging handle whacking the casing on the way out. Tape or a bit on inner tube might alleviate this.

Is the dent in the neck a ring all the way around? A lot of Saigas have "stepped" barrels that mark the casings for the benefit of Russian law enforcement. I didn't think the .223 models had this but it's certainly possible. If it's just a mark on one side then it could be a chamber imperfection or maybe it's hitting the dust cover.

No sure about the rim scrapes.

The dent in the middle of the case is called an “AK Kiss”. Some guys ignore it, even those that reload. Others put a small piece of plastic sheet metal edging on the dust cover where the case hits as it is ejected. Still leaves a dent, but it’s much smaller. I shoot mostly steel cased ammo in mine, so the AK Kiss doesn’t mean a thing.

The scratch is probably from the bolt sliding over the next cartridge in the magazine. I polished the bottom of the bolt, no more scratching.

Mine doesn’t dent the case neck. Are your empties landing on cement that may be denting the neck?
