Saiga Conversion Information Needed

Is there a way to make the Saiga 7.62x39 accept regular AK-47 hi capacity mags without adding a bullet guide? Any help would be appreciated!

MasterMolder makes a Saiga mag for use without a bullet guide, however if you don't meet 922 requirements it will technically make the gun illegal. Never heard of anyone getting hit with it though.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I meant to say that actually, that I would make sure it's compliant. I wonder if an SKS mag would work ... hmm ...

EDIT: This must be at touchy subject or something because no one wants to reply ... I don't know why, it's not like it's illegal or something. I just asked a simple question.

SKS mag just isn't going to work in a Saiga. They're nothing alike.

For better info, you might want to head to someplace where there's a greater concentration of Saiga aficionados. We have a few folks with them here, but not a whole ton. If people aren't interested or just don't know, they aren't likely to reply.

Installing a bullet guide is not that hard, I've never worked on a gun in my life and it only took me five minutes. I got mine from Carolina shooters supply and it came with everything you need to install.

I don't think it's a touchy subject. The lack of replies is probably because getting standard AK mags to work in a 7.62x39 Saiga without adding a bullet guide can't be done.

It's fairly easy to modify either the Saiga or the standard AK mag to get the mag to lock properly in the mag well, but it most likely well not feed properly without a bullet guide and there's not any other modification you can do the rifle to rectify that.

If you want use standard capacity mags, you basically have to choose between using 20- or 30-round mags designed specifically for the Saiga, or you'd have to install a bullet guide to be able to use standard AK mags.

Okay I see what you guys are saying, thanks for the heads up. I didn't know that installing a bullet guide wasn't that hard, I was under the impression that it was from the videos that I've watched. I'll check out that kit and see what's involved.

Drill and tap locktite and done.

Dinzag arms sells a kit with the right size drill and tap which makes the install a snap.

There are three things you can do to botch the bullet guide installation.

You could drill the hole in the wrong place. This could make proper placement of the bullet guide impossible. Be sure you're drilling in the right place, and use a center punch.
You could drill the hole all the way through the receiver. You don't want an unnecessary hole in the bottom of the receiver. When the bit cuts through the trunion, stop drilling.
You could break the tap off in the hole. No permanent harm done, but a broken tap can be a real bitch to get out. Keep plenty of oil on the tap, go real slow, and back the tap up a quarter turn or so for every half turn you make. If you put too much strain on the tap, it will break.

If you are not sure you can do any of these steps, take it to someone who is sure.
