Saiga .308 Good? California Legal AK?

I've been toying with getting one of the Saiga .308 rifles. These Russian rifles appear to be an AK action, but with the trigger a little farther back so they work with a standard (non-pistol-grip) stock, and in .308. They use 8-round box magazines. Anyway, since I live in California, I'm thinking this may be about the closest to an AK we can get these days. Are these legal in California, since they don't have a pistol grip? Also, they seem like a good buy in a semi-auto .308 (Aim Surplus has them NIB, including a Russian scope, for around $440).

Any experiences with these? I have a couple of SAR-1s AK clones I enjoy, but one of these might be fun. What kind of accuracy could I expect? They are supposed to have heavier built receivers and barrels than a typical AK.

man, that is such bullsh*t. ok so the california government says we can't have pistol grips or other scary features such as flash hiders or collapseable stocks. the saiga rifles don't have any of that. so what's the big deal?? i've been wanting a saiga-12 but i guess i can't buy one until i move out of state. how would that gun be any different from any other automatic shotguns like the benellis i see people use all the time at the skeet ranges?

Sorry, not Kali legal

The August 16, 2000 ruling added the AR-15 series and AK-series weapons on the Roberti-Roos list. They are banned by action type not by features. Since the Saiga 308 is a Kalashnikov derivative, it is banned.

I think it is time to move.

I am seriously going to start considering moving somewhere else. I don't need this hassle. Anyone have any good suggestions on where a well armed 23 year old red head may come share his Dillon RL 550B with his new found shooting friends, preferably in small town or rural setting?

El Rojo -

Arizona or Nevada are good locations. I've already requested a transfer to Arizona, we'll see. God bless the 49 states of America :D

Can anyone tell me if the Russian Saiga Rifle is any GOOD?
With everything that is going on in California I have a feeling the Republicans are going to win a few more elections with the whole Energy situation. That State sucks right now worse than New Jersey. I'm glad I live in PA they aren't bad with Gun Laws here.

I have observed a number of Saigas in 7.62x39. They seem to be reliable and fairly accurate (2.5" scoped, 3" with iron sights) as fired by local deer hunters during the sight-in season. .308 Vepr also looked very good (my fav gunsmith likes them) but magazines are quite expensive ($40-45 per 10rd).

Ive got one,,,and its extremely nice.
Never jamms, pretty damn accurate.
Fit/finish on the hunter .308 is fantastic. great wood, tight machining...and a general great gun especially for the $$.

as everyone said,...

as of sept. 2000,... the court passed on a desicion on kasler vs. lockyer,... with this desicion ALL "AR & AK" variants, it doesn't matter if you don't have any offending characteristic (ie. pistol grip, flash suppresor, etc.) as long as you have an AR/AK variants, it is an assault weapon and has to be registered.

i know, it bites. :barf:

I set out rock filled coke cans at about 100 yards, and can pegg em pretty consistantly with open sights (stock irons). The scope it comes with is nice too, but i havnt really used it to much yet, and wont get the chance too, as i just sold the Siaga a little while ago. (Im once of those PRK's who did not want to register, and did not want a legal risk, so i sold it out of state).
Id definately call it a good hunting semiauto. Much better quality than any of my past AKs'.
Clip- i think may have been 8 rounds- maybe 10...i dont recall.
