Saiga .223 picky eater??

I'm going to be taking a roadtrip next weekend to pick up my new Saiga .223 from J&G Sales, really excited.

I was wondering if anyone who owns one has found that the Saiga to be picky when it comes to what you feed it?

I was figuring I would get a can of the cheap 55gr. Wolf ammo while I am there. It looks cheaper then what I can get at my LGS and I won't have to pay shipping. My only concern is if I will find the Saiga has problems with it will I be stuck with 480 rounds of ammo I can't use?

Any experiences you have witnessed would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks Stu.... I saw your write up a out a month ago when I was doing research. I liked it and bookmarked it for later. Unfortunately, I used my conversion kit money toward a safe so the conversion is going to have to wait for a while.

Thanks for the input on the ammo..

My Saiga .223 hates 55 grain bullets, and loves 62 grain. The iron sights 100 yard group sizes with 55gr are 6 to 8 inches depending on the ammo quality. With 62gr bullets the group sizes are about half that. Best ammo so far with mine is Lake City 5.56 SS109. Silver Bear 62gr FMJ shoots good. Tulammo and Wolf 62gr FMJ is acceptable. I have yet to try some reloads, but plan to come Spring.

No issues with any ammo I've used in mine. Tulammo, Brown Bear, Silver Bear. 55 grain, 62 grain HP, around 350 rounds of each. Russian ammo for a Russian rifle. Good deals on the stuff from Aim surplus and ammo to go.

Thanks for your input guys. So far I'm looking at two out of three saying it won't be a problem. With the dissident concerned on the grain of the projectile.

Thinking I am going to give it a shot...

Anyone have anything else to add?

"Picky" is relative to what aspect you are looking at.
It certainly won't be "picky" when it comes to feeding and extraction.
It may be "picky" when it comes to accuracy based on bullet weight.

Mine has yet to fail with wolf silver bear fiocchi or some old green tip surplus stuff. Thats the bonus with the saiga it will eat 5.56 all day and ask for more. Try doing that with a lot of the ar15s that are out now.
