Yesterday, I was tinkering with commercial M1 cabine 15rd magazines (got a bunch thinking they were surplus GI, was wrong). Got one to work better, removed it and then replaced the normal "storage" mag in the M1 and was going to put it back in the safe.

The bolt was still open and it slammed forward chambering a round. No slamfire this time. I checked the the muzzle was pointing away from cats or anything dear to me. Would have messed up a wall at most, plus my ears and pants.

Moral: extra caution is good, even if you "know" that the slide is locked back or that chamber is empty.
