safety lesson learned

Learned an important safety lesson last night. I had never taken apart my SW pistol magazines before and wanted to see if the finger extension could be removed. I forgot, or rather didn't think to unload the magazine first. Not knowing that the finger extension was the actual base of the magazine I slid it off and because the spring was under such load it shot up into my eye! That was extremely dumb. I got lucky and ended up with only some broken blood vessels in my eye and it is quite sore and bloodshot. Man that spring hit hard! I feel pretty stupid about it and wanted to share. Be careful!

Thanks.

Nash:

Glad to know you didn't lose an eye in this incident. I haven't taken apart a mag in a long time, but I remember searching the garage for a couple of hours till I found the spring.

safety point well made....unload the magazine, too

And wear safety classes when manipulating devices that have springs under a lot of tension.

How many of us have sent a 1911 recoil spring plug sailing across the room? I suspect it would hurt a bunch if it hit you in the eye. Wearing a pair of glasses protects both your eyes and your ego.

yes Saftey glasses at all times when taking down a firearm , especially if using solvents !took me a week to see straight after some stuff got into my eye , and I was wearing glasses

You haven't lived until you've stripped the Astra 400 or 600, they have truck springs for recoil springs! You have this little collar that you turn, and they you best be ready to catch the spring! I wasn't ready the first time, and there's a nice dent in the wall where the spring hit.

Well, now you know that if you ever have to use you gun and it jams you can still put their eye out with you magazine spring!;) :D

Glad you're okay.:)
