I everyone, been awhile but I'm back to reloading again. I moved up here to Alaska at the end of 2014 and have been pretty busy since then, fixing up this place. Anyway, I traded a guy for these slugs and they are coming in at 517 gr. Would that be considered 1 1/8 oz for load data?

Thanks in advance.

437.5gr to the ounce.

517-437.5= 79.5

1/4oz = 109.37gr

If you are looking for load data, that 517gr is over 1 1/8 and less than 1 1/4 oz. SO data for 1 1/4 oz should be safe. Should be. All the usual practices and disclaimers for working up loads apply.

The only primers I have are CCI 209 and can't find any load data for them and the 1 1/4 oz slug. since the cci 209 is less than the win 209 primer (pressure and vol.) I should be able to just use the cci 209 primer where the win 209 primer is recommended? the lyman manual uses Win 209 primers for just about all of it's load data for this slug. I did try to find some yesterday, but only managed to find the cci 209....there were some Federal 209s at one store, but that is it. I searched for an hour online, but couldn't find any data for this slug and the cci primer....Anyone have any?

Call CCI

ask them about load data for your slug and their primers.

Also ask were you can get their primers local to you, or online.

I made it to Anchorage today and found some Win 209 at Cabelas. made some up and they work good. now I want to make up some 00 buck shot, but once again, I don't have the right wads....is there an interchange for wads? I have some 1 1/4 oz, but they are not what the load data asked for....

I have loaded a lot of those Lyman slugs, and the data I have calls for the discontinued Win. yellow 1 1/4 oz. wad. That one works perfectly, and can still be found if you hunt hard enough. Other 'replacement' wads that I've tried have not worked as well. If you aren't able to find them there, let me know, and I think I know where there are some. A bag or two will go a long way....

msta,

Think you will find that 00 buck does not nest (layers of three) in a 12 ga. hull with plastic wads that have the petals.

My experience,
I played with cutting the petals off AA wads - the red, white, and yellow - with varying results.
Cutting the petals off allow you to nest three layers of three 00 without bulging the hull.

Results were great for some of the shots and then you would get one that patterned off center.
Not sure why, but I was dissatisfied with the results, so I abandoned the effort and
switched to card and fiber wads as suggested in Hercules/Alliant loading guides.

The proper card and fiber wads - 12 gauge for plastic hulls - are available at most black Powder shops or on-line.
I also sleeved the buck with two wraps of grocery store store brown paper bag that helps to tighten the patterns of the buck.
It is cheaper than buying the mylar!

FWIW, Reloaded plastic hulls tend to deform or mushroom more quickly than factory loads when left compressed in a magazine tube.
I now reload my buck loads with brass hulls for this reason and the fact that the brass hulls are much easier (and less messy) to waterproof.

Nine 00 buck weigh around 1 1/8 oz.
Loads used Promo, Red Dot, and 700x for light loads 1150 fps., WSF for full power 1300 fps., but settled on Herco.

Herco was one of the old Hercules Powder originals (along with Bullseye) and the powder the company chose to give their name to for a reason.
It is a real performer in a shotgun as well as many high performance handgun loads.
