SAA Advice

Hello,
I'm new here and have been thinking about getting a SA revolver, I have all semi-auto handguns and rifles at the present time. I have had SA's in the past a ruger old model 3 screw .357, bat masterson 45lc and a jager .357 so I am familar with them. My question is what is out there now days? There aren't many stocking dealers around me to see much, I'm going to search around the board to see some older post but thought I would ask some opinions. Thanks for your help.

Colt, USFA, Uberti, Beretta, Taurus, EMF, AWA, Ruger. Prolly a few others I can't think of right now. Most of these are Colt 1873 clones with hammer mounted firing pins.

Hawg, Do you have any thoughts on one for entry level? I want it to be 45lc for sure and I was thinking the 4-5/8 bbl. I will do some research on the group you mentioned above, once I get home to my pc.
Thanks

Single Action Colt clone buying can be very addictive ...To lay one in hand is only the start ...
I own a Uberti Colt in 45 LC .....and only want more ...I have the 4 3/4 barrel model and carrying it even with only 5 chambers loaded gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling ...:D

Yeah, I can understand the addiction, I have been buying firearms since I was old enough to do so. I've recently got into the busse family of knives and it is the same way with them. The only thing that's going to stop me is getting a saa to play with.

Uberti Cattleman. The Ruger New Vaquero is a good gun but isn't Coltish enough for me. If you want the option of loading six with no worries and don't care that it functions nothing like a Colt you might want to consider one.

I know uberti makes several companies guns, I was wondering about the one they make for Cabela's the millenium I think it is. I ask because there is a cabela's 35 miles from me and I was going to head down tomorrow to compare several different ones. There is also a shop with a cimerron and taylor all from uberti, I think.

The Millenium is good but it has a matte black finish. Not exactly pretty. Cimarron and Taylors are a cut above the standard Cattleman and are priced accordingly.

Hawg thanks for all your help. I'll see tomorrow how they compare and if the finish is worth the cost difference.

I too, would suggest something in a Uberti-built replica. My personal preference would be a Cimarron but I also have them from Uberti, Taylor's, Interarms and Dixie Gun Works. They're all good guns. The New Vaquero is a good sixgun, better than the original Vaquero but it lacks the appeal of the more traditional guns.

i want the real "colt" but they are about 1200 dealer cost before anything

Modern Colt's can be had for around $1250 street price. If what you want is that level of finish but don't just have to have the prancing pony, I'd highly suggest USFA's standard SAA. It wears a finish similar to Colt but is a superior sixgun in every way. Good news is it's running around $400 less than Colt. A better sixgun in every way for less money, how can you beat that??? Much more than just a hollow name.

This is what happens if one buys a 45 Colt. All 45LC....

I've got a couple of Colts, not in the picture, but they're not shooters. I'm kind of partial to SA Ruger Blackhawks or Vaqueros for shooters. Since they use a transfer bar, they can be safely loaded with six.

I've loaded the Redhawk, in the picture, up to 325 grain Buffalo Bore rounds and the Vaqueros, down to 180 grain cowboy loads. One has a lot of range with 45 colt rounds, better if you reload.

The next SA that I'm buying is the 44 Special Blackhawk distributed thru Lindsey. This is a special run, so hard to find.

Hey guys what about caliber? I have had 45lc and .357, I don't reload or have any plans to in the near future so what caliber would you guys recommend? I will shoot at the range but not competition at this time.

If you're looking for the cheapest route .357. That way you can plink with .38's. .45 Colt is......................well .45 Colt, nothing else needs to be said. I prefer 44-40 myself but it's a caliber not readily available over the counter.

I agree 45 is well like said, nothing else needs said. I was thinking about .357 for the reason of price of 38spl. When I first started this thread I was only thinking 45lc but after reading so many other threads here and on the benelli board and the open range forum. I getting crosseyed but have found so much info. Thanks again.

Well I just back from Cabelas and a few other shops, I am even more confused. I handled cimarron, several different uberti, heritage, taylor, ruger, beretta and a mason open top. Calibers .357, 38spl, and 45lc as well as several barrel lenghts.
Ruger Vaquero very smooth action but I don't like the open gate to release the cylinder to load/unload price $500 .357 and 45lc
Cimarron was very nice with really nice timing at $475 45lc
Taylor was a beauty stainless with full engraving $700 45lc
Uberti cattleman nice color and smooth action $459 45lc
Beretta stampede not crazy about it but nice looking $can't remember
Uberti Frontier great looking but I wasn't familar with it the hammer goes back a ways $459 45lc
Heritage NO! trigger guard was small my finger barely fit
Mason very nice looking, heavy $489 38spl
Uberti millennium finish was horrible almost like a parkerized brass backstrap and the action wasn't very good at all but the price WOW $299 You do get what you pay for. 45lc
The price isn't the problem, I just want to make the right choice, I know what's right for me won't nessasarily be right for another. I have some more thinking and reading to do. Can you guys recommend any more sites with info that might help.
Thanks

No matter where you go or who you talk to the answers you get are going to be each persons personal favorite. The majority are going to be Ruger and Uberti with a smattering of Colt purists and USFA idealists.
You can go here and ask. These guys shoot SAA's more in a month than most folks shoot in a year. http://sassnet.com/forums/index.php?showforum=22
