SA for Self Defense

Just thought i would ask for some comments on this. First let me say that i own a S&W M19, a Colt Commander 45 Cal and a 38+p snubbie. I can use any of these for SD or HD. Yesterday i bought a new NM Ruger Single Six for plinking. Always wanted one so i treated myself. Have not fired it yet so i don't really know its or my capabilities. In dry firing i notice that to rapid fire i have to come of sight picture to re-cock. Not that easy to put a couple of rounds center of mass quickly. Then again i just bought it for plinking. Comments on fast firing with a SA?

Just my experience

I carried a Cimarron Thunderer with Birds Heads grips in .45lc for a number of years. Probably because I did a lot of cowboy shooting and it was slicked up I felt totally in control with the piece. SA will get slammed by most, but if that is what you are most comfortable with, that's what you should use IMHO

Sir

Randy,

If it were me...... I wouldn't use a single action for SD or HD......... You stated a good enough reason in your text..... Some folks will argue with me on a number of reasons...... My personal feeling is that a double action revolver is a big step up from the single action for SD or HD which is in my mind the same..... Your not defending your actual home, you are defending your life and those lives intrusted in your family or dwelling.

The singles are great for plinking and cowboy shooting stuff but I wouldn't want to step (in what I call a backward direction) on equipment benefits just to use a single action for SD work. You have to remember the double action revolver requires you to raise firearm on attacker as your screaming at him to stop and drop his weapon (if time permits) then your trigger finger is getting busy........simple and basic motor functions with brain functions... Now, if you go the single action route you have to use your thumb for cocking and recocking.....and as your first shot is gone your sight picture or direction of aim is as well (unless your real good and can cock and get busy on the trigger again......? I hate to say NO WAY - Don't do it.......It is better than a steak knife right? Just my 2 cents continued........ I would stick to a double action for all the right reasons..... Good luck to you sir :)

I agree with what Rojoe said

It's probably not a good idea for most people. Let's just say I could get off
six rounds with my Thunderer pretty quickly. Not for everyone and I may been delusional as well ;)

Actually you are not handling the single action correctly for rapid firing. The revolver rolls up in your hand on recoil. In that position you place your thumb on the hammer and as you pull the revolver back down on target you cock the hammer all in one motion.
Like anything else it takes practice and a good single action shooter can hold his own against a double action shooter. His only disadvantage will be in reloading.

+1 on that - works fine. Since you superimpose the recoil/recovering phase and the hammer cocking action, you don't lose any time. It works out very naturally, as does raising the gun with the thumb over the hammer and cocking the hammer for the first shot in one motion. I was shooting my double action this way until more recently I have shifted over to double action shooting mode to try to become a better rounded shooter... but not because it works better for me ;) To me only real downside of the single action is loading/unloading as you say. Firing is just fine.

The way we did it in Cowboy shooting was hold gun with right hand if you are right handed and cock hammer with left hand. Most people that go into a defensive stance use both hands anyway so it isn,t that different.

A guy at our shop carries a Birds Head Vaquero in 45 colt. He loves it and has no problems managing it as a primary SD weapon....that said I will stick with my G29. ;)

If you like a SA and you're proficient with it then it will work for self defence. I've met people that use things most of us wouldn't even think of using for SD but let me tell you they weren't people to screw with.
