SA comparisons: SRHs vs SBHs

I like the look of the SA revolvers that are out there, but if I imagine suddenly having the €1100 I'd need to buy one of the big Rugers, I find myself thinking "why would I limit myself to an SAO revolver?"

I know they are mechanically simpler, with a frame that is beefier by virtue of not having to accommodate a swing out cylinder, but the build of the Redhawks hardly makes them susceptible to failure.

A result of this is the SBH is slower to reload.

So, this left me with the trigger action. My Redhawk SA action is OK. Better than my semis but not as light as my little .38.

So how does an SBH SA trigger action compare to its DA/SA stable partners?
Is it any better?
 
The trigger on the Black Hawk is much lighter than the Red Hawk in single action. It is just a mater of which you prefer.

As well as the singe actions are lighter by a wide margin. They can get more power, while still being practical for carry in a holster.

Sorry you have to pay such a high price for them over there. For close to the price on has to pay there for one. Both could purchased here.
 
The question is sort of like, "How long is a string?" It just depends. Most manufacturers models vary from gun to gun. Ruger is no different. In my experince, the SRH has a better SA trigger right out of the box. I've never seen a NM Ruger SA that had a great trigger right out of the box. In my experience, they ALWAYS have some creep; often quite a bit of creep. And I've own and shot more than my share. The SBH/BH triggers can be made spectacular and light if you prefer. But on average the SRH is going to win head to head right out of the box.
 
My 1976 SBHs trigger is fantastic. My recient rugers are not near as good out of the box, including my SRH. Mechanicly they are about the same so either can be made to have a sweet trigger. It's just a matter of a little smith work.
 
What do you want to do with it?

If it is a range toy, then why worry about the speed of reloading or the speed of a second shot?

If you are using it for carry against large 4-legged threats, I'd lean toward the da/sa format, as you can get off a second or third shot while being rushed, or you can press the gun into the animal and keep pulling the trigger.

If it is SA then you would need both hands to cock and fire it for defense.

For the range, it is all a matter of how you want to shoot.

I personally like the look/feel of the SRH over the Redhawk and Blackhawk, but that is because I started with a GP100. The SRH looks like a big brother to it, so I am happy.

If I were to choose based on my favorite western star, I'd then go with an old time western look, and I'd pick a RedHawk. I personally am not interested in SA revolvers. I admit I'd only be using it at the range, so it isn't a real concern. I just like my revolver DA/SA.

That said, the Redhawk does look nice and feels good in my hands.


Oh, triggers? What they said. Too many variations from the factory for me to give meaningful input. Like was said, the SA can have a lighter [and safe] trigger pull than a DA/SA revolver, from what I recall. However, you can still have a crisp SA pull in a DA/SA revolver that is under 3lbs. That is good enough for me.
