SA 17 rnd BHP mags

There. I just confused every newbie pistol enthusiast with that title. I'm so proud. :)

This was brought up on a different thread, but I want to repost the question here:

1. how do they cram an extra 4 rounds into a magazine of the same dimensions? I assume it is done by allowing the follower to depress further, and using a different spring. Is this correct?

2. Is this set-up reliable?

3. mil-spec South African mags are for sale in a few places. Are these mags, in particular, any good?

I just ordered one, with the intention of testing it out. I'll let you guys know how well it works. In the interim, though...anyone able to answer the three aforementioned questions?

I asked the same question about 17rd Beretta 92 mags by Mecgar...different follower and springs and quite reliable. Ditto for SA Beretta mags I have seen, maybe BHP mags are good, too...

I have one and so far it works.I ordered from cdnn(1-800-588-9500),i will order two more if it continues to work as well as it has,i have only fired 150rds of american eagle through this mag so i plan to shoot some jhp next time.It comes with a mag loader and you need it i had a hard time loading 13rds without the loader. The mag is about a 1/2 inch longer with a wide plastic base.

I asked about reliability on the Browning list at egroups before buying some. Several folks wrote back to say that they had used them and found them reliable. I ordered a few (caught them on "sale" one Saturday at CDNN) but haven't tried them. They do stick out the bottom a bit. I think if you CCW a BHP you'd keep the factory flush mag in the pistol and carry the SA BHP HC (see, I can do that too! <vbwg> ) as the spare. This is what I do with a SIG 228 -- use a 226 mag for the spare.
