s7w model 10-6

I am looking at a s&w model 10-6. it has a custom 6inch barrel,trigger work and bo-mar winged sights. the number on the yoke is 71847 then below A18. any ideas on when the gun was made? blue about99% intact. also average value? thanks,gene

The numbers you show are most likely an assembly number and inspection mark. You need to look on the bottom of the frame where the grips are to give us the serial number. You might have to remove the grips to see the numbers. It should also have a letter C or D in front of the number. The letter is part of the serial number.
The model 10-6 started in 1962 and was produced until 1977 when the -7 came along so the gun you are looking at should be from somewhere in between.
Value, on an altered model 10? I have no idea.
