S&W vs GSG

Looking for something in a .22lr clone to give the 556 a break with the cost of shooting. Im down to either a gsg5 sd model, or the S&W 15-22. Both have the feel and rep im comfortable with, but cant decide which to go for since they are the same cost. From those who have either had, or even shot one or both, which did you prefer and why?

If your .223 is an AR, you can spend $149 and put a 22LR adapter in it. Simply changes out the BCG and it comes with a 22LR magazine. But if you want a separate 22LR rifle, why not get a rifle that was made for the 22LR, instead of pretending you're shooting an AR? Get a ruger 10-22 or a winchester. .223 was designed for an AR; 30-30 was designed in the lever action. 45acp was designed in the 1911. Why not get something that the 22LR excels at.

When I started out buying firearms I really wanted an MP5, I knew they'd be expensive etc. and I just assumed there would be one that wasnt full auto ( obviously I didnt know anything about firearms etc)

Then I see there is no MP5 9mm HK semi auto etc. but there is a 22LR one and I got all amped up really wanted one. Several different boards I was reading dissuaded me (others as well) from the MP5 one (I guess the "better" one has been discontinued, now there is an "official" one that isn't as good?) and said the best would be the S&W M&P 15-22, I really wasnt so sure I wanted it but everyone raved so I bought it...

Now I love it so much I have spent about $350 in Magpul accessories AND added an Aimpoint Micro R-1 for it. It's amazing, addictive, fun, accurate, reliable, dead nails quick and handling like an AR etc. It cycles Federal Bulk, it works more accurate with say AutoMatch, and it snipes with Mini Mags, it just gets better every time I play with it... I say play, it is the closest thing your money gets you to just acting like a DevGru lol. Pure fun.

Part of me would still like the MP5, It looks so cool. But my S&W M&P 15-22 , plus I have a Remington 597 sporter (hooked up) and a Savage Mark II GXP, I have 3 .22LRs to keep me occupied. The MP5 (and SIG for thast matter) are nice, but expensive and I just chose a different direction,

I have the GSG522 SD. I absolutely love it. I also have a 10/22 as well as a Winchester Wildcat. The GSG works great. No issue with any ammo. (I only buy the cheap bulk) Its a fun gun and works great. Good luck. Sounds like you cant go wrong either way.

None of the above, I'd suggest a Sig 522 above and beyond any current offering without hesitation. I'll never part with mine, been 100% reliable in over 1200 rounds of mixed ammo. Slap a Primary Arms M3 multi reticle on it and you have yourself one fun rifle. I know it wasn't one of the choices given but I mentioned it in the event you haven't considered it.

The GSG-5 can be finnicky at times.

I'd recommend the S&W or the Sig 552.

People have said the 552 has better fit and finish than the 556...

You suggest getting a .22LR conversion for an AR-15 but yet put down the idea of using a M&P15-22 because it is too much like an AR?

Please explain how S&W did not design the M&P15-22 specifically to shoot .22LR.....any less than Ruger designed the 10-22 to shoot .22LR.

I suggest a 10/22 because that would be the better 22LR. I offered the 22LR adapter if the OP was hell bent on having an AR that shot 22LR. Less expensive than buying a separate M&P22. A 10-22 can be had for $200-$250; the adapter for the AR is $150. An M&P22 is over $400. Pretty basic logic. Not hard to comprehend.

Of your choices I'd go with the S&W M&P15-22. They are more expensive than a "non-tactical" .22 but are a lot of fun and make a great trainer. Of course I went in to buy the S&W and walked out with the Colt M4 .22! :p That's a great little rifle too. (It wasn't all impulse, I had researched both of them.)
