S&W sells "used" revolvers.

Bought a S&W 640-1 today, dealer sold it as a used gun. The blue plastic Smith factory box had a S&W label that said "used". Serial number "CCSxxxx" is 1999 vintage, but gun came with a shell casing(ballistic fingerprinting) in an envelope that is dated 2/02. Dealer said that he had bought a lot from Smith, all used.

Have any heard of this before, are these sales rep. demos or from courses run by Smith?

Accredited writers can borrow guns from S&W (and other makers)and some of these may also be sold from time to time. If the writer doesn't buy the gun, he has to return it, usually after 90-120 days. It is then "used". Many probably stay with the company, awaiting loan to other scribes, but others may eventually be sold. They would likely be low mileage guns at a good price.

You have to give them credit for putting the "used" label on the box and being honest about it.

They could have cleaned the gun up to make it look like new and not have said a thing about it. ;)

Yeah ... except for the "serial number trail" that could be followed ... imagine the fallout !

All of the above and also range guns from the academy and some dealers.
