S&W pre sellout mod 649 and +P loads?

A friend of mine has a pre sellout S&W model 649 Stainless Steel pistol and wants to know if it is safe to use +P in it. We looked up the manual and model 649-1 is rated for 38 only but the 649-2 is rated for 38 +P. The particular pistol involved has no -1 or -2 number stamped on it.

My contention is that a plain model 649 must be considered to be a -1 and unsafe for +P. Comments or criticisms?

M & M, the safe/unsafe proposition is a false one. Plus Pee will wear out the gun sooner, but unless the revolver is "unsafe at any spead", it won't grenade with the use of +P. I routinely carry +P's in my snubs, but practice w/ standard pressure ammo. I suggest that your friend do the same. If your life is on the line, accelerated wear on you lifejacket is not a real concern.

Plink and practice w/ mild ammo for your snubby. Plus Pee when lives are at stake.

I don't take the same stance on this issue w/ autopistols, for the obvious reasons.
