Thease gun guns seem to be getting harder and harded to find. Or is it just me? And if you can find one in good shape it won't come cheap. The 649-3 is even harder to find the the 640-1 guns. Lots of ones out there with the lock and MIM parts the I'm sure shoot just as well but there is just something about the older one the catch my eye.

The good old S&W's are getting hard to find, and not just that model. People that have been around firearms for some time appreciate the quality and workmanship...and downright classic look of them. Heck even some of the older autos they made are bringing a real premium if you can find them even.
Try finding a nice 4506 or 1006 or any of those type, that isn't an old worn to death cop gun at a price that a mere mortal can afford.

The models you mention are difficult to find because they were produced in that particular configuration for a very short time. S&W did not produce J-Frames in .357 Magnum until 1999 and the locks were phased in when S&W was bought by Saf-T-Hammer in 2001.

While back I picked up a pre-lock 640-1 .357. Had some scratches on the cylinder and top strap. But it shot right on the money.

Well I took care of them and replaced the case-hardened trigger with a flash chromed one.

Yes I still have it and it's a dandy gun.

The top one is it before I added the flash chrome trigger but after I added Eagle Secret Service ebony stocks.

But my J frame carry gun is a 340PD .357 with night sight (along with Glock 26.)
