Welcome to the forum. It is almost impossible to tell anything about it with so little information. What model is it? If it is a Smith & Wesson the model number will be on the frame inside the crane area. Does it have fixed or adjustable sights. Also photos would be helpful.
desert340, Welcome to the forum. As posted only marginal information can be given with the information provided. I believe you have a Military and Police ( old model name ) AKA the Model 10 ( new model name ), Your serial number was used in 1981. The same serial number series was used on 7 different K frame models, so you can see the problem. I'm assuming that ( assuming always gets me in trouble ) that you have a Model 10 because of your reference to a " Police Special ". As already been mention, S&W never used the Police Special names, that was Colts ball park. Open the cylinder and confirm that Mod 10 is stamped there and post back with that information and what further information you want.
Yes I can tell you all you need to know. $75 was too much, but with inflation you should sell it to me for $100.
Seriously, you've got a great personal or home defense gun, and a great piece of Americana. Keep the +P loads out of it if there is a pin in the top of the frame just over the rear of the barrel. Enjoy.
