S&W pinned barrel ...Cons??

Saw a Smith&Wesson pistol .32 s&w long advertised stating Pinned 4 inch barrel. Is pinned barrel a bad thing?

Pinned barrels are mostly best if you already have one because they will always fetch a higher resale value. :) Conversely, they will cost more when you go to buy one. :(

Pinned is neither bad nor good. It was just a feature S&W used, but the rest of the industry got along quite well with crush fit barrels. In time S&W went to the crush fit and the accuracy hasn't suffered none.

"pinned" defines an era when S & W quality was very good. it doesn't make a revolver shoot any better. counterbored chambers on the centerfire revolvers falls into the same category

Number of pros to the pinned barrel, including:

1. The barrel is more likely to be aligned with the sight vertical, instead of canted left/right as is common with the crush fit barrels.

2. A lot less stress on the frame and barrel extension, espeically if the person running the machine that screws the barrel into the gun (crush fit) isn't paying attention. I've seen far too many S&W revolvers with crush fit barrels that have obvious stress rings in the barrel from being screwed in too tightly.

3. Easier to remove the barrel to replace it.

4. Easier to replace a barrel.

if the load is hot enough to cause the barrel to turn then I would suggest that you back off on the load. that sounds like abuse to me

I agree on the 2 piece barrel as that just a cheap cop out. several of my S & W's have pinned barrels but that doesn't make them any better than an unpinned barrel. the overall quality of that era is what makes them better
