S&W Perfromance Center - worth it?

The S&W 627 PC looks like it might be the ultimate .357 magnum revolver - eight shots, five inch barrel, big N frame (686 frame loooks scrawny compared to the GP, but I'll bet the N frame would not). I can't help but be intrigued with it. I have been eyeing up the good old GP 100 with a six inch barrel for a while - I have a Super Redhawk which I like very much, so I'm a Ruger fan of sorts - but the 627 PC is swaying me its way - except for the price, very expensive, could buy a GP and a Marlin 1894c for the same price. Any thoughts on this subject?

Dunno about the N-frame, but my PC-13 is good, but not great. I have several revos with better DA pulls. The fit and finish MAY be as good as the pre-'80's revo's, but nothing "to die for". FWIW

Personal....
If I wanted another 5" large frame .357...
I would get another Model 27, 1981 or earlier.

Only 6 shots but sweet action, fine workmanship.
Many match rules preclude loading over 6 anyway.

And....several hundred dollars less money spent.

The different configurations of the 627 are favorites with competitors. It and the 686 show up in all sorts of forms at revolver competitions. For IPSC it brings you close to the single stack 1911 in terms of capacity and they are ususally set up with moonclips for very fast reloads.

I'll chime in with a maybe. ;) I bought a 5" SW PC 629-5 V comp 44 mag late last year. I have to admit that I much prefer how it feels/balances/handles to my 7 /12" Ruger Redhawk (both are good guns though and a sibling prefers the Redhawk). That said, I had it shipped to a gunsmith for a custom trigger job before I even picked it up. Shouldn't have to do that with that expensive a firearm, but it is a nice gun...

first,you have to like S&W's. i do,but i also like Rugers.
i'd like to see S&W start using the ball detent on their standard revolvers.
i like S&W's hammers, trigger action, and barrel choices more than Rugers.
i like Rugers durable simple design, grip frame(though grip sellection is wanting by aftermarket),sight system, and cylinder release better than S&W.
i really like some of the stuff the Performance Center is putting out. my problem is that after looking at the smithing options list,i can't get what i want on a design they could easily accomidate.my experience with customer support was poor.if S&W would support more custom smithing with a factory warranty,i think it would be better for all.granted it should be under strict S&W supervision, and only on designs they feel represent the company in good light.

I like the PC revos, but...

...most of them I've handled STILL seem to need a trigger job. Not a huge problem, as I have a gunsmith here that kinda specializes in DA wheelgun trigger jobs. Does a standard trigger tune up on S&Ws for well under $50. Just a slight hangup of mine that a Perf. Center gunoughta come out of the box slicker than a standard model. Wish they'd do a 9mm K-frame gun, moon clip style, would sell well for IDPA. At least a bit better than the L-frame .40 cal did! OOps, did I type that?:D

Worth the price?!? Yes, I think so:

YMMV...

IF...
Those scoring rings are the same dimensions as the B-16 25yd slow fire target...

Looks like about a 3½" group.

I own a 627PC and to quote Hutch, it is good but not great. The revolver has some interesting features; 8 shot, moon clips, comp, the ability to remove the comp...... But I definitely don't think it is worth the price. I own a fair number of Smith revolvers and a large number of .357 revolvers of various makes; so I have some basis for comparison. My favorite .357 revolver all around is the Ruger GP-100. In other words, I like your first pick better. IMO, the Ruger is the ultimate shooter (defined as a gun to use, to carry, to shoot.........). I personally think the trigger on my Ruger is right up there with the rest of my .357s. The accuracy is comparable. It's robust construction is legendary. It has plenty of strength for a prolonged diet of hot loads yet it is a nice size for belt carry. I am leaving in a couple days for a deer hunting trip and there is no question what will be at my side. I dearly love my Smiths, but they never go in a holster and never go anywhere but the range. They are too beautiful to risk any damage.

Sam,

That's a 25 yard rifle target, shot at 50', with handloaded .45 acp. Group size is 1 5/8" counting that darn flier.

It's amazing how difficult it can be to keep up concentration for 6 simple shots.

Ya, I choked...
