S&W Performance Center 945

Just got back from the local gun shop where I went for my weekly look see. They had a S&W Performance Center 945 (5" barrel, adj sights, stainless) that was just beautiful. Now I need to know, is this gun really worth $1245.00? I was actually looking at buying another Sig (P228), but now I'm wondering. If I were willing to spend that kind of money, would it be better to get that Sig and maybe a HK or Walther? Any advice would be welcome as I will probably wind up with some kind of new gun tomorrow. Thanks.

ONewman: Hard to decide what to tell you. I own, shot and am much attached to my SIG 239s (9mm & .357 SIG). I've also had and enjoyed several SIG 228s and a 220. They are great guns. I also own the 5 inch 945 you mentioned and the 4 inch 945 with fixed Novak sights. The 945s have been 100% reliable, very accurate and they're very beautiful. If you want a .45 ACP 1911 type gun, I wouldn't hesitate, get the 945. If you want a gun for CCW the 945 is too big (even the 4 inch one IMHO). However, I've shot both 945s in IDPA and they do great. What can I say, I am very fortunate to own these guns, both the SIGs and the 945s. I guess my advice would be to follow your own feelings on this. You probably already know what you really want to do and you're just hoping someone will confirm it. Good Luck! Regards, Dennis

Think of the S&W 945 and a teenager and a Corvette. Would it be nice to own? YES! Is is practical? Maybe. Maybe not. For concealed carry it's too big and for home defense, a Para-Ordnance with hi-cap pre-ban clips (which are still being offered by the company are still available) offers more firepower. Do this mean that my answer is "No"? Sort of. But remember that there are teenagers out there who actually do own a Corvette. ;)

FUD: I'm curious as to whether your analysis of the 945 holds for all of the customized 1911. Regards, Dennis

ONewman >>>Buy the 945>>> If you don't, you will always wish you had!!!I've been sampling 45's for 40 years, and haven't found one I like as well.Performance Center items are mostly all of superior quality IMHO.Good Luck-Wally

I won't inflate the value of my opinion by calling it my $0.02, but:

I've rented a 5 inch 945 about three times in the past couple of months, and IMHO it is a remarkable gun. I found it very, very easy to shoot accurately.

Congrats on your impending purchase!

Well, I just got back from puchasing this fine peice of craftsmanship and wanted to thank all of you for the input. I personally carry a P239 in .40 cal, so this one was just a want to have. I'm glad to hear that is as fine a shooter as S&W claims it to be. Thanks again for helping me get over the sticker shock. By the way, the shop threw in 2 additional mags for free to sweeten the deal a little and S&W gave me a $50.00 gift cert to spend in the store, so I bought another. I'll let you know how mine shoots when the time comes.

ONewman: Congratulations and good shooting! How about posting your impressions after shooting it a time or 2? Regards, Dennis

ONewman--You're a wise man!!! You will get a lot more than $1245 in pleasure out of it. For years I agonized over thr $40 I spent on that first Woodsman, which I later sold for close to $500.Your great grandchildren will wonder why you didn't buy two of them. Enjoy-Wally

I've had a 945 for a little over a year. It is a nice gun, very sexy and a good shooter, but it is definitely not the most practical gun in the world. I tried using it in competition and actually found that it fell below another PCW piece, the .40 Limited. The .40 Limited is a single action conversion of a standard 3rd gen smith. It has a much better trigger than the 945, trust me. Smith made a nice novelty with the 945, but it is more Show than Go.

I wish the moderators would close this thread. I've been lusting after a 945 since they first appeared on the market and this isn't helping.
Oh well, guess I'll have to sell that kidney I wasn't using any way. :D
Congrats on the new pistol ONewman.

To be perfectly honest, the 945 is the only full-size customized 1911 that I have ever been in contact with. I don't own one but I've had the opportunity to fire one a number of times and I like it a whole lot better than my Para-Ordnance P14-45. The reason I bought the P14-45 instead of a 945 was for the higher mag cap. Some may disagree, but not many things beat 15 rounds of .45ACP! Stay safe,

FUD
