S&W Performance Center 3" V-comp Range Report

Took the S&W 627 3" V-comp out for its first test drive today. I have to add that this is my first revolver, otherwise I've just been shooting semiauto pistols. First, it is a really big heavy gun, heavier than my Valtro.45 or P7M8, which I shot today for comparison. Left the compensator on the barrel. The trigger was smooth out of the box and light, I'd guess around 4 pounds in single action. Tried Winchester white box FMJ 38 specials, couldn't shoot it well because I had trouble with my grip technique (my fault entirely - different from a semiauto). Switched over to .357 Winchester JHP white box, seemed kinda strange but though the recoil was more pronounced there seemed to be less muzzle flip? It seemed easier to shoot the .357's more accurately than the .38 specials. The ergonomics are a little bit off for me. I have small hands and had a tiny bit of trouble gripping the gun with the stock wooden grips. I'm going to probably going to get a set of Eagle checkered secret service grips and/or some rubber grips (anybody with suggestions). Overall, when I could grip correctly with .357 loads (and when my arm wasn't too tired), I could shoot the beast well. I think a little weight lifting, find a new hand grip technique (the instructional one Rob Leatham uses for his 1911 in the America Shooter series doesn't work well for yours truly), and new hands grips. I really like shooting this beast, and I'm going to probably shoot more 357's in the mix. Overall in my hands, the .45 was the most accurate, the 9mm the easiest, and the 357 I need more practice with but overall a very, very nice pistol.

Tman,

Congrats on the new relover. You got a nice one.

I'm guessing you got less muzzle flip with the .357 mag, because the rounds generated enough "gas" to make the V-comp work. Those slots really don't do much with low pressure .38 specials.

For grips, I put Hogue rubber mono-grips on all my revolvers. I have average size (9) hands and the rubber ones are slightly smaller in size than the wooden versions.

Good Luck...

Joe

very nice. for me,a revolver man at heart, i'm glad to hear you went to the top.
i have been looking at getting a S&W again and noticed some of the nice revolvers The Performance Center is producing. from my experience, and my taste,i like the 657 Lew Horton design in 41 magnum with 2 5/8"barrel. they shouldn't have scalloped the barrel, but i can live with that.
you may never grow to enjoy revolvers the way i do. i personally find the rythm of the DA trigger and a large cylinder to be exactly what makes me feel comfortable when shooting.
though i've shot many semi-auto's,i find i like the fixed barrel 380's the most fun. maybe the fixed barrel reminds me of a revolver barrel since it doesn't move(?). i'd probably like the P7M8 as well.-

Tman,

JoeHatley is right on mark from my viewpoint. The comp needs high speed and preferably low weight bullets to really click in. When it does the sensation is more like the recoil is straight back and was a fascinating sensation to me.

Like Joe I put the Hogue rubber monogrip on all my revolvers. I am not sure how they fit in the scheme of sizes, though.

My inclination is that small size grips might be best suited for beefy hands that can fill in the voids. My 5" 627 V-Comp came with the wood grips designed by Jerry Miculek and I just can not hang on to them as they seem too small. Again Jerry has beefy hands.

The Hogue monogrips seem disigned for my boney hands.

BTW- i'm partial to the Craig Spegel boot grip. these are small, but have resulted in some very comfortable and accurate shooting for me. i put some on a 640 and was totally sold.your mileage may vary, but hogue makes a similar design in its lightweight Bantam(more widely available, and no 4-6 month wait).

Thanks!

Just wondering. Some of the grips for the N-frame guns mention either square or round butt. Does this term apply to the grips themselves or to the butt of the gun itself? (some grips mention they are designed for square butt, others round butt). I'll be looking at both the rubber grips and maybe some of the checkered wooden grips. Geez, this is getting more expensive by the day!!!! Thanks for the info everybody!
