S&W or Ruger DA revolver?

How do you believe the two compare from a quality standpoint? I know they each have their strengths. Mainly I'm thinking of M29 vs Redhawk, M60 vs SP 101, GP 100 vs 686.

Two good companies that produce and back their products. Generally, I think the quality is similar. Neither is gauranteed to be fool proof. A lot of people are turned off by the visible locks on the S&Ws. Ruger is smart enough to hide theirs. Historically Smiths have had better triggers. OTOH, the LCRs have better triggers than most J frames. The best thing is to handle both and see what does it for you. Both are good choices that boil down to personal preference.

Ruger seems better right now. I'm sure someone will contradict me saying he or she found a bunch of bad Ruger revolvers. Either company will fix any revolver they put out that has a problem.

So, buy Ruger.

Both companies make quality revolvers and stand behind their products on the off chance you have a problem. While I would not go so far as to say that one is better than the other, they do have distinctly different feels in the hand and different triggers. The Ruger seems to sit lower and further forward in the hand while the S&W sits a bit higher and further back. Also, the Ruger's trigger stacks more noticeably towards the end of its DA pull while the S&W's is more consistent all the way through. Which feel is superior is purely a matter of personal preference, so the best way to decide is to handle and, if possible, shoot both revolvers before making a purchase. You really cannot go wrong either way.

and if you're lost in the woods and have to build something.
The ruger can be used as a hammer and still
shoot like a dream!

Hello azmark,,,

I have owned Rugers,,,
I now own more Smith & Wesson's,,,
As far as quality goes there's no discernible difference.

People will say the Rugers are stronger than S&W's,,,
Some will counter that S&W's are tighter,,,
Who can really know for certain.

Because of what I have read in various forums,,,
If I were prone to loading dinosaur killer cartridges,,,
I would probably go towards the Ruger over a Smith & Wesson.

Since I don't load hot rounds I stay with what feels best in my hand,,,
Because of that I've chosen Smith & Wesson over Ruger,,,
Again though, it's just my own personal preference.

Handle them and fondle them,,,
Then choose the one that makes you smile. :)

Happy hunting.

Yes, pretty much the same here. I really think a lot depends on your personal preference and the specific application. Remember guns are tools and some guns are better for certain applications than others.

Rugers (of any vintage) for single actions. Older S&W's (pre-lock/MIM) for double actions. S&W used to be considered at a higher level of quality but I no longer believe that to be the case with new guns.

I own both & like them both. But I choose to let RUGER to do my dirty work that way I know it will be done.;)

I was in the market for a DA .357 this spring. I compared a GP100 to a 686 SSR down at my LGS. The GP100 seemed like a better value so I bought it. I'm very happy with it.
