S&W models FAQ repost

Thanks, I needed that.

Sadly, if this list was updated the discontinued column would be much longer. -- Kernel

At least it covers the good ones.:D

Probable error in the first line tho.
Shows the M frame Ladysmith as using the .22 Long.

According to Himmelwright (1915 ed ) it took the .22 S&W Long. Which was the older .22 Long Rifle with a propriatary crimp to make it suitiable for use in light weight revolver. This cartridge became the .22 Long Rifle as we now know it. My mother's used .22 Long Rifle. Granny got one new and never fired it, thought it to be more suitable for paperweight. She packed a .44 in purse holster.

Over the years, the .22 S&W Long terminology has been lost but the cartridge lives on.

Jinks gonna love this.:D

On a related note they show the year that they quite recessing the cylinders, does anyone know what year they quit pinning the barrel? Was looking at a model 14 and it had a pinned barrel, but not the recessed cylinders.

That's normal configuration for earlier 14. Recess was for magnums and rimfires. I think they quit pinning the barrels in 82. Cost reduction and all that.
