S&W Model 686 Weighted Barrel

Hi all. I'm thinking about purchasing the S&W Performance Center's Model 686 Weighted Barrel revolver.

They claim the gun is perfectly balanced, superb accuracy, etc., but it is also going to be nearly twice as expensive as a standard SW 686 6"

Does anybody have this gun? Do you think it is really worth the price?
Any other thoughts, comments, impressions?

Thanks in advance!

It is likely intended for a narrow competition market. The heavy barrel would undoubtedly be advantageous for fast double-action work. It would not however be a good or even ideal carry or hunting gun.
If the price were nearly double, I would want other features included for that price, including a .500 wide smooth trigger, and factory lightened double action pull. Just a weighted barrel would not be worth that much to me.

While I'll occasionally shoot a stock gun in a local match, everyone I know (including myself) who uses a revolver in competition has them tuned by a gunsmith at some point, including revolvers from the Performance Center.

I've never shot the PC Weighted Barrel 686, but if it were me, then, I'd spend the money on a standard 6-shot 686 and have it tuned & customized by a good gunsmith.

BTW, if, by "practical shooting", you mean USPSA/IPSC, check the rules, but here in the states, a moonclipped 5" 625 .45acp would be the better choice in USPSA. And if you want to use it in formal bullseye competition, you could use it for both CF legs. And if you're also interested in IDPA, know that they have a 4" barrel limit. Whether a .45 or a 686, then, a 4" barrel gives you a bit more versatility.

Thanks folks!
Yeh, it looks like price-wise they're asking too much for this model... I just wanted to have a good gun for target shooting given the fact there are not many gunsmiths around where I live.

Frankly, for IPSC shooting I'd rather use 4" standard 686 than any 6" model anyway...

As for the 0.45acp models, we are generally not allowed to have them here...

Again, thank you for your responses!

S&W 686 PC Weighted Barrel ' COMPETITOR'

Top gun. Trigger pull like an M60 Tank starter motor - too bloody heavy! I am very happy with my new weapon and it was accurate out of the box. The Performance Centre trigger pressure was crazy - it felt like 10-12 lbs! It shot about 4 inches high at 50 metres but right on line. Great group, very smooth and never wavered with full factory 357 ammo. Rapid Fire was a breeze!

I paid about $1,650 Aust for a new weapon, after they had been about $2,400 two years ago. The Aussie Dollar at $1.07c US makes for a great buy.

This was my 61 st Birthday Present and I am happy now that my gunsmith has completed a trigger job and it just 'flows' in double action & single action.
