Purchased revolver for son's collection...was told it was older but can't find any information on age. Serial #CEZ3XXX. Can anyone give me an idea when this was manufactured....?

S&W 686-6

Thanks so much for your help....my husband had one in the 90's that went to the oldest son after he died and I found this one for the younger son....may not be his dad's but just like it and in beautiful shape...it has an internal lock that my husband's didn't have but otherwise looks just like his.

This in no way answers your question, but the finest shooting pistol I've ever had was a 686. I never should have sold it!

686-6 ....is a 2001 gun ../..in 2002, they went to the 686-7's engineering revision...

In the catalog it'll be referred to as an 8 3/8" barrel..., L frame and the 686 model is still in production in a number of variations.

They're solid guns....they shoot great ...the extra weight is a plus.../ the 4" and 6" guns are a little more popular in my area - especially the 4".

With the change to the 686-5's in 1997 ...S&W changed the gun to include MIM hammer and the floating firing pin, MIM triggers and the Internal Frame Lock....so S&W collectors are not too keen on this model as of 1997 and beyond. But even though collectors aren't too excited about them - doesn't mean they aren't solid guns.
