S&W Model 66

I just bought a NIB Model 66-5 2.5 from someone online who stated that he believed it was made between 2000 & 2001. The serial # is CEE6422. I need help identifying when it was made and the general overall quality of S&W revolvers during that time. I have had it to Ed Boening here in southern Oregon who has bead blasted it, chamfered the cylinders, done an action job and replaced the trigger to a .312 combat and am really impressed with it. I'm just curious as to others opinions regarding this time period for the Smiths. I realize it's not comparable to the pinned, recessed models but I would appreciate some input. Thanks in advance!

I hava a Smith model 66-5 2 1/2 incher from Wilson Combat made in 2000. It also has a some of the custom features yours has. I love mine. Very accurate and a pleasure to carry. I hope you enjoy your 66 as much as I have mine.

Melan,

Some may tell you you're missing something because your gun is stainless, or not handmade by elves who lived in hollow trees in Mass. 70 years ago, or whatever. But the bottom line is, it's a k-frame S&W; it will shoot better than you will for many thousands of rounds, and (if you're at all like me and many others) you will come back to it again and again as a wonder of design and ergonomics.

I advise you not to worry about its collectibility, or its desireability, or anything but this one thing: shooting it. Shoot it thousands of times, until you realize what a truly remarkable thing this little modern M&P really is. Shoot it enough, and you won't give a rat's youknow for what anyone else says or thinks about it or how it compares to original handmade magnums or whatever holy grail they may point to.

I shot mine (66-6) today, and I'm here to tell you: handguns may get older, or pricier, or bluer--but when it comes to the pleasure of controlled, versatile, dependable shooting, they don't get any better.

Edited to add; welcome to the forum!

M66

I also have a S&W 66 2.5' and it's one of my favorite revolvers, versatile, accurate and just plain fun to shoot, I also really like the stainless finish. Like Chris W says, it's a shooter, the more you shoot this gun the more you appreciate it.

Have a 66 with 4" barrel one of my favorites the gun can shoot better than I ever can or will. The more I shoot it the better it gets, now if it was just blued :)

I bought a 2.5" M66-2 about two years ago and I love it. I stopped carrying and shooting my semi's after that. K frames are just such a surprising pleasure to shoot, they're very accurate, can shoot anything in the .38/357 flavor, and they feel perfect in my hand. Every time I shoot it I think "Why have I not had one of these all of my life and why don't I have a few more?" Buy a K frame, you won't be sorry.
Here's mine:

Melan, there are many handguns out there to like, I doubt that any are better than a 2.5" 66, or a 3" 65. If the firing pin is on the hammer, it is pre generation 6. If you open the cylinder, you will find the model and generation number etched into the frame. ;)

Edited to say, Welcome to you! ;)
