undefinedundefinedundefinedI rarely see any info/comments on the 65. It is the basic brother of the 66. I am considering purchasing one. Any thoughts?

S&W M65

The Model 65 I am looking at is a 65-7. Anyone know/estimate the year of manufacture? It is in great condition. Doesn't appear to have been fired much. A few scratches/small nicks. No forcing cone erosion or cylinder play apparent. Shop wants $ 359.00. I figure it's worth about $250.00 - $ 275.00.
Any thoughts w/b appreciated.

Great gun I have its cousin a S&W 13, blue steel with a 3" barrel. they make for great cary guns and have a reputation for holding up real well. I am not at home so I can not date the one you are looking at but I would say fairly recent manufacture date due to -7.

I've owned 3 M65's, and still own 2. My first one was customized by Karl Sokol of Chestnut Mountain Sports. I have a 3" and 4" stock now.

My personal opinion is that the M65 is quicker and more natural to shoot than the M66, just due to the sight configuration. Much better for CCW, too, since the sights don't snag on clothing or dig into your skin.

I'm not trying to start anything against adjustable sights, but I've used the fixed sights more, and I've had adjustable rear sights loosen up on me. But, I still own many S&W revolvers with adjustables, too.

The $350 price is high for a 4" gun, but not completely outrageous for a 3", from what I've seen anyway. The only available 3" M65 available now is a Ladysmith.

Of all the S&W K,L, N frames I have, the model 3" and 4" are my favorite revolvers.
Quick to sight and ease of removing from holsters.

The 3" 65 is the overall best revolver for general concealed carry IMO. And it is pretty handy at the bedside or around home for that matter.

I don't see a -7 listed and -6's started in 1998 so it would be a very late gun.

I saw a 4" at a gun show a couple of weeks ago for $235. I don't know the -#. I have 2 -3 3"ers that are my main carry guns. They usually run $300 or better if you can find one. Model 13 3" are out of the question. I haven't seen one in over 20 years myself.

Thanks to all for your imput. Bought a 4" Model 65. Like it better than my Berretta 92FS. Guess I'm a wheel gunner now.

David,
If the thought of a 3 inch Model 65 really gets you breathing hard, you can send your 4 inch gun to the Factory. I did that a few years back with a used 65. I had a factory bobbed hammer put on, converted the lock work to DAO, put on a trigger stop, and installed a complete set of Wolf Springs. Its a beauty now, with the heavy three inch barrel, and the Hogue LamoCamo stocks. Shoots darn good too.
I carry it often, in a Sam Andrews Hybrid Saddle holster.

Mannlicher,
Thanks for the info. And all that customization cost you how much? Actually, there are still a few 3" M65's available if you look hard enough, but depending on what it costs, your method may be the way to go. How long was the revolver tied up @ the factory?

My 3 inch Mdl 65 is my favorite all around gun. Its truly PRACTICAL, as well as tactical.
No adjustable sights to worry about, and easy to conceal, but big enough to shoot well fast with.

I like both the 65 and 66. I have a model 19 and its a great gun. I would like to find a 3 inch 65 or 13. Either way the k frame guns are well made hard to beat guns.
