S&W Model 64 Trigger/Hammer Tune-up?

I just picked up one of the used Model 64's from J&G Sales, and couldn't be happier with the deal. It's a 64-6, excellent condition as advertised, shoots to POA, and the cylinder timing is perfect. It's DA only with bobbed hammer which I'm OK with since I've been working on becoming a DA only shooter.

The ONLY issue I've got with it is trigger related, and I may be getting picky. The basic trigger pull is pretty smooth, maybe a little heavy as compared to my 686-6. After the cylinder locks "in battery" however there is about another 1/8" of fairly gritty pull left before break-over. During this 1/8" of pull, the hammer continues to rise.

I'm wondering if there is anything I as a fairly adept tinkerer can do to improve things in this area; hammer or trigger replacement, sear polish, etc.

I probably wouldn't even be worried about this if it weren't for my 686 which is smooth as silk, and came that way new in the box. (but what's wrong with that?)

Any advice, suggestions, help is appreciated. jd

That's normal operation for the S&W.
In single action models, there should be little movement of the trigger after the hammer releases.

In most all S&W revolvers in double action, the cylinder will lock up then the trigger moves some distance before the hammer releases.
This is totally normal so your S&W isn't "broke", DON'T try to fix it.

I'd recommend a good cleaning and lubing to get all the old gunk and dried lube out.
Don't attempt to "polish" the hammer or trigger since this will only break through the very thin case hardened coating and will ruin the parts.

As you slowly pull the trigger, watch the hammer as it comes back. Does it, at some point, wobble to one side? It will usually correct itself as it continues back and then wobbles at the same place on the way down. This is normally a "cosmetic" issue, but notice if it's gritty at that point.
