S&W model 64 price check

I ran across a nice used but in good condition
Four inch barrel model 64 yesterday at the local
Gun/pawn establishment. Mechanically it is in
Excellent condition, just a few dings from being
Carried. Tag said $249, was offered to me for
$240OTD. Seemed like a good price. Thoughts?

It's a fine price if it locks up well and the timing is good and the barrel isn't bulged.

In my area, there is a glut of these as the local HUGE gun store outfit just got a couple of trade-in contracts. These came from some Dept of Corrections, the best we can tell.

Of course, that's my locality. Each would certainly differ. Even with the fact that there are MANY of these available around me, all of them having been issued guns of varying exterior condition, I still say that's a fantastic price for a stainless K-frame in good working order. If it should happen that yours is a civilian gun that was simply sold commercially when new and was never part of a LE contract or an issued gun, and the exterior condition backed that up... that price would be a ridiculous STEAL in my opinion.

Let's just hope your next post in this thread is something like, "DADGUMIT, I went back and someone else had already bought it! :(" ;)

They're nice guns, I bought two of them a few years ago and haven't had a bit of a problem with either. 64-3s, I believe. I paid $200 but they're still a good buy at $250.

J&G hasn't had any for a while now. I stopped in several weeks ago and they were out. Their web site right now looks like they have been raided! Virtually wiped out of everything! This gun fury right now has people going crazy and buying everything, I guess.

Now isn't it kind of sad polymer .380s like LCPs cost MORE than a find S&W .38 revolver?

Agreed, there's really no comparison for what you get, if open carry was more widely practiced I think that would change.

OP, I can't believe you even started this thread when you should have posted "Look at what I bought today for $250.00".

Can post now, have bought it this morning for $240 OTD. It will have to wait a couple of months to come home, it's in layaway for now. I have a 5 screw pre-model 10 snub nose in layaway that gets to come home first next month from layaway. Thanks for the input guys! Have a Merry Christmas!

Hey Sarge! (WOW! I just had a flashback to many, many years ago - anyway)

Is it a 4" or snubby or what?

I'm sure you will love it when it gets home.

K-frame 38s set the standard for 38spl revolvers. That is a great price; even if you take it home and hate it, you will be able to get your money out of it easily.

We had a bunch of Brinks trade-in M64-4s and -5s in the area over the last two-three years. All of them were bobbed-hammer, DAO. They went (quickly) for $200 each.

I helped find homes for five or six. Should have bought five or six more and stuck them in the safe--they sure aren't going down in value.
