S&W Model 60 Sight Mount

I just recently purchased a new model 60 a 5'' barrel. So far I far I have been more than happy with the accuracy and consistency of shooting with the iron sight. However I am growing more and more interested in longer range target shooting and possibly small game hunting. For this I would be more comfortable with a more appropriate sight. However, as of yet I have been unable to find anything that would enable me to mount a scope on my j-frame. Does anyone know of anyone who makes anything that would work?

I strongly suggest that you give the folks at S&W a call and ask their advice. Or, if you have a really, really good gunsmith in your area of the world take it to him and see what it would take to drill and tap the receiver of the 60. Are you really sure that you want to scope a Mod 60?

I wouldn't. It is my opinion that there is not enough strength in the top strap to drill and tap for a mount. A offset grip mount could be produced but, no assurance of accuracy. I am unaware of any ventilated heavy rib J frame barrels that could be used to attach a scope to either. You could have twice the value tied up in having a barrel and mounts custom made. The compact size would also be compromised by the heavy barrel and the size of the scope. It could be done but, SHOULD it be done? You could buy a M28 or even a Taurus Tracker cheaper.

Handguns are like golfclubs and most other tools. It's hard to get one to do everything. ( No matter how much you love it.) . Find a used 4-6" barreled k frame and scope that. You'll find them starting at $200 or so depending on caliber and finish. Mounts are plentifull and if you splurge on a post 94' model, most are already drilled and tapped.
Furthermore, a K frame will tend to deliver more usable accuracy because of it's larger size and weight.
