S&W Model 60 Grips

I just acquired a S&W Model 60 but the grips are too small for a comfortable grip. Can anyone recommend a grip which will make it feel more like a L frame grip?

You don't mention how old your M60 is or what grips are on it now. However, most historic J frames came with S&W-logo wood "Magna" stocks or black rubber Uncle Mike's boot grips. Both of these grip types lack a pinky rest and a covered backstrap, which is nice for pocket carry, but leaves something to be desired in terms of shooting comfort. :(

Most newer .357Mag J frames come with large rubber grips that incorporate a pinky rest and covered backstrap, but these retain the pronounced backstrap curve shape of a standard round-butt J frame.

If this doesn't quite cut it, here are some more thoughts:
  • Crimson Trace Lasergrips are quite popular with many J frame shooters because they fill the hand more than factory grips and are made of cushy rubber that absorbs recoil better. Downsides, however, are high price and the fact you may be paying for a laser you don't want.
  • Laminated oversize stocks from a new M60 "Pro Series". These are very, very nice, and I believe the factory sells them as an accessory; if not, try GB.
  • Vintage factory Target stocks; the round-butt versions are commonly known as "banana stocks" or "bananas" amongst S&W enthusiasts, and you'll realize why when you see some. ;) Downside? Rarity and consequent high prices.
  • Google "J frame conversion stocks / grips" and see what you can find. FWIW conversion stocks change the backstrap shape from RB to an emulation of square-butt, which is the more common shape on the larger-frame guns (although newer S&Ws are mostly RB and come from the factory with conversion stocks).

The rubber Uncle Mikes that came with my Model 60-14 and 640-3 in 2008 were long enough for the pinkie to be part of the grip and the rubber covered the back strap which allows the grip to really fill the hand. I had put fancy wood grips on the guns but changed back to the Uncle Mikes because they really helped in shooting the guns.

These came with the gun when I bought it. They shoot nice... carry not so well.

For my J's, I like the...

Pachmyar Gripper Professional. All J's are the square butt.

A bit narrow in width but longer in fore / aft direction.
Seems to fill my hands.

Glove size using the D3 gauntlet and wool liner is size: 5

Depending on how large your hands are (I buy a size "L" in leather work gloves at Costco), you might find the Crimson Trace laser grips workable. Expensive, but that dot really shows up across the bedroom at 2 am! It's what we have on my wife's 637, carry and night stand piece. Rod

The choice of grips depends on how you plan to use the gun. If you are going to use it as a collectable shooter go crazy on the grips.
If you plan to use it as a concealed carry think long and hard on how is the best way to to get it from the holster to pointing at the bad guy.
If you choose the latter then the holster type can be as important as the grips. It's all about expedience and getting the gun out of the holster very fast so ugly can be beautyful when it saves your life.

I bought a set from badgercustomgrips.com That look, and feel real good.
I bought a set for my model 60 and liked them so much I bought a set for my model 66 snubbie also
