Thoughts on this revolver. Good, Bad, Awesome, etc.??? I have an o
opportunity to buy one @ 95% for a decent price. Don't see many advertised?
Guess folks are holding on to them? Thanks!

586

I once had a 586 with the 6 inch barrel. Very strong and heavy duty gun. I think I sent it back to the authorised service center for something-I think it was a hammer problem, hammer binding or rubbing the frame. I don't think they did anything to fix it. Said it was not out of specs or something. They should have fixed it with shims on the hammer boss to maybe get it back in the center of the frame. But since that bothered me that they would not fix it, I sold it. Maybe just an anomoly, but a good design, if you get a good one.
And stronger than the smaller K frame guns to shoot magnums. I also sold a Ruger Blackhawk that was new cause the throats were well under the barrel groove diameter. They told me the undersized, and roughly machined, I might add, throats were in spec. No factory fix. That impacts accuracy and did not make me confident in the gun so I sold it too.

S&W 586 Revolver

I'm told this particular 586 was used in a few competitions and some target practice. Maybe 500 rds. Looks great overall. Comes with original box. Serial is ACT69XX. Any idea on value? Book says $ 250.00 for 95%er?

Back in 1990, I gave my best friend, for his birthday, a revolver. His first. He had been talking for a couple years about getting a handgun and kept asking me my opinion. I went and found a used S&W 586. I wanted a magnum that would allow him to shoot light loads for practice. I wanted him to start and learn with a revolver. He now has several weapons and shoots a lot, but, he still keeps that 586 in his nightstand.
Its a fine fine weapon to learn on, practice with, Conceal carry or any general use you can find. I have the 686, have had it for years, will always keep it.

my grandfather had one about 15 years ago, and traded it for a thompson center renegade muzzel loader, which was a huge mistake! he put everything from downloaded chain store ammo, to stoked handloads of is brothers, and super hot law enforcement only .357s through it with no problems. the 586 is built to take massive punishment. if the price is right, snatch it up quickly.

I paid $325 for one a few months back. Pristine condition, blue with a 4" barrel and was made in 1983. I had a choice of a model 19 is the same configuration and condition but I opted for the strength of the 586. I love it!

To give you an idea if I think the are any good.

I have a 686 in 2 1/2", 4", 2 x 6", a 581 in 4", and a 586 in 6" (which I paid $50 CDN for, replaced the hand and it was good to go).

Yeah they are great! :) :) ;) ;)

Over the years I have owned two of the 586 Smith's. The first one I obtained shortly after they were brought out by Smith and Wesson. It was a 6 inch model. It was a strong and reliable revolver but the balance on it just did not suit me. The second 586 I had was a 4 inch model, I was much happier with this gun, the 4 inch model in my opinion had a much better "feel" to it. In any case they were both good guns but both were traded. I still have a 4 inch model 19 and a 5 inch model 27 which serve me well. The 586 is a solid gun, accurate, and reliable. Plus I like the blue much better than the stainless 686.

586 - 686 the same except 686 is stainless.I have a 2 1/2 in barrel for the 686 so I guess they are available for the 586 too. Both great guns.
By the way-to the previous poster "G'day Dan The Thunder from Down Under here"-I didn't know TFL was back up and running again or I'd have been here earlier.
All the best
