S&W Model 41 question

Last night I took the barrel and slide off my new S&W M41. Upon replacing them, I see the rear of the slide overhangs the frame by a sixteenth of an inch or so -- it's not flush. I didn't notice before I removed them the position of the rear of the slide relative to the frame. Is this slight overhang normal? Or have I not reassembled the pistol correctly? :(

Well, first off I have to say that this overhang you have doesn't sound at all right. Worse still is that I see no way to assemble an M41 so as to cause this(or at least, not my 1970ish M41). Take it back apart and see if there is maybe some grit or debris in the works somewhere. If all else fails you can always call S&W and ask to speck to the service dept, or take it to a good gunsmith.
I don't know what the problem might be, does the breech face appear to be completely flush to the slide face? Look on the left side and there should be no visible gap between the two surfaces. If there is a gap then the slide is being somehow prevented from closing completely, you'll have to figure out why.
I hope some of this was helpful, good luck on solving the problem.

Try it one more time. Take it apart and check for burs or misalignment of something. Put it back together carefully. If everything goes back together and you still have that slight overhang, I wouldn't worry about it.

The recoil spring is on the guiderod backwards??

I would disassemble and check this.

Also check the serrations in the top of the slide and on the underside of the barrel for some debris or a small piece of brass.

I had a very similar problem w/ my model 41 many years ago. After I disassembled the slide from the frame for the very first time, I could not reassemble the same, i.e., the slide would just not engage the frame rails no matter how hard I tried.

It took the keen eye of a gunsmith to find a minute, steel burr within the rails which he filed off in 2 minutes. Maybe this could be your problem, too.

I would recommend NOT firing the gun until you check it out.... the idea of an "overhang" doesn't sound right.
