Owners only please - just trying to get a feel for actual failures. Not "my brother's sister's uncle's cousin had a extractor melt down into a puddle of slag..."

How many of you have had to replace the extractor on your S&W Model 39-2?

Also thanks to those who gave all for this country...

I have had no failures with my 39-2. It prefers ball ammo. Even some of the other 39 series guns never had an extractor break. JGLSprings did your uncles mother son tell you they were all bad?

Interesting question posed but may be worth mentioning that the dash-2 engineering change specifically addressed the extractor itself.

I have three Model 39's, one is a no-dash with the old-style extractor and the other two are dash-2 Models. I also have a pair of 52-2's which run similar extractors. Of those pistols, I have had to do extractor work on two of them.

Seems to me that treating the extractor properly helps (not slamming the extractor hook OVER case heads. Otherwise, a new coil spring under the extractor is low in cost but not the easiest spring to replace.

To the subject, S&W build, shipped and sold well over 400,000 of these pistols. It's a fine bet that most of them work. ;)

Sevens,

Thanks for the reply, I'm currently waiting for a "new to me" Model 39-2 to be delivered next week. I've been chasing one for a long time as this is a replacement for one the "got away" when I was first married and out of money.

The only complaint I read about the 39's is the extractor and this poll it just an attempt to get a feel for real owners vs "internet lore". And since that was a long time ago and I had to sell the early on, I never had any problems with it. Of course that was long, long ago - in a life far, far away.

Did you have to replace the extractors or just the springs?

Thanks for replying and have a great weekend!

Like Sevens said, the -2 was the fix for the extractor issue. So by getting a -2 vs a no dash, you are addressing the issue.

That said, I love my -2, it is a great shooter and carries/conceals very well.

I think it's time to park the fnp9 and carry the -2 and extra mag...:D

Isn't exactly unusual to need to replace an extractor and/or its spring on any firearm.
"...I've been chasing one for a long time..." Needing an extractor wouldn't be an issue. $28.05 from Gunparts if you need one.

Never had to replace an extractor on the 39-2s I had, but did experience extraction issues. The probably three or four 39-2s I had, all purchased new, were not the most reliable pistols around. The original wide spring steel extractor on a co-worker's 39 no-dash did break. Back then the part was available and I replaced it for him.

I've had three M39 pistols. The first, a M39, was TRASHED by 5M rounds of Canadien issue hardball but the extractor never EVER failed.
The second was a M39-2 also with nearly 5M rounds though it with out ANY problems. I traded it for an extra special BR.HP that tripled my money shortly thereafter.
The third is a M39-2 from 1971 that has NEVER spent a day unloaded since then and shoots like a dream.
WHY do people like you worry about such things? TELL ME how many you've seen fail.....
And so it goes...

I guess this forum isn't a place where someone who is excited about a new purchase can post a conversation starter to talk about their new gun.
