S&W Model 37 Questions

I just purchased a new-to-me Model 37, with no other digit on the model number on the frame, serial 77J3xx.

Can anyone help me with identifying the year of manufacture?

Also, any suggestions on ammo for CCW would be appreciated. I'm finding a lack of any ammo in the local stores which isn't either +P or generic fmj.

Hello. I cannot help you on the year of manufacture, but am pretty sure that someone who can, will.

As to carry ammo: With Federal's decision to stop selling standard velocity Nyclad 125 gr .38 Spec HPs, I'd practice with standard velocity ball and carry the +P LSWCHP as made by Remington, Winchester, or Federal. I use the Remington as it appears to have a slightly larger hollow point. Just shoot a few to see where it hits and use them rarely after that, their primary function being "stopping" ammo for carry.

Best.

The 37 is fantastic!

My 37 3-inch is one of my carry guns, but the light weight has forced me to experiment ($) with any non-plus p load I could find, and several plus p's-ouch. Remington offers a 148 grainer, which delivers amazing groups but moves about 710 fps, kinda slow but great for practice. I finally settled on Winchester Winclean's 125 jsp, @ 775 fps. Not the best of bullet types, but the groups produced are just slightly less than the wadcutter loads, and I prefer knowing where my shots are going to end up.

Thanks for the replies.

Today I found two boxes of the federal 125 nyclad non +P's at a local gunshop, and will use them for carry.

The fmj's, or equivalent reloadfs will do for practice.

Ditto, entirely - - -

Sure do like the little alloy-frame snubs!
I heartily second all the above remarks, especially with regard to the 158 LSWCHP+P carry ammo. You have a good "find" in the Fed Nyclad HPs.

Look into the Kramer pocket holsters for carry, but I've had very good use from the Uncle Mike's and DeSantis models.

Best,
Johnny
