S&W Model 36

I inherited a S&W Model 36 -5 shot and it has a chip out of the hammer. I am wondering if I should just file it down a bit because it exposed the point of the checkering at the top of the hammer? I know that most of the time it would be fired double action but when it is cocked for single action the point of the checkering cuts into my thumb? Or should I ask S&W for another hammer and have a gunsmith put it on?

It all depends on what you want,,,

It all depends on what you want,,,
Either of the solutions you mentioned will work.

One costs you a bit of time and some labor,,,
The other costs you a bit of money.

If you go the file route,,,
Be gentle and go very slow,,,
It's very easy to take metal off,,,
It's not so easy putting it back on. ;)

Enjoy that snubbie my friend.

You will probably have to grind, not file, that hammer. It is purely a cosmetic problem so it is up to you what you want to do. Replacing a hammer is not beyond a DIY job and you can order one from Gun Parts Corp. (www.gunpartscorp.com).

Just be sure you give them the model number, including the dash number, like Model 36-3 and the serial number.
