I have an S&W Model 36 Chief’s Special. Can someone advise how I can change the front sight to white. Can it be “painted” with something to show a better sight picture? Or replace?

Thanks…Dan

Clean off the sight edge you will paint with alcohol to remove any oils etc. Mask off the top and bottom of the sight edge with scotch tape. Get something like a little bottle of Testors model paint or other enamel white paint. Get a little paint brush and go to work carefully. More than one coat is OK if needed. Unless you want to go to the process of spray painting which would involve alot more masking and trimming the tape with a razor blade, etc. Plus the oil must be removed where you want the tape to stick. Actually some kinds of hobby paints are acrylic or water based and not all that durable. Get enamel in any case. It might eventually wear off in a carry holster but in a gunsafe or case it will last for years. And it is cheap to fix as compared to having a gunsmith put in a colored insert or new sight blade. Do a neat job. I am always seeing guns with nail polish slopped all over the front sight to redden it, and it looks like XXXX. You can also use the white paint as a base for other colors if you decide to try that also. Let the paint dry a day or so before applying a thin film of oil/protectant where you removed it around the sight. Don't get bore cleaning solvents on it.
