S&W Model 29 question

Barrel on Model 29 - 8 3/8 #S217xxx appears to be factory cut (2 crossway slots and grooves for scope base clamps 2 3/4 apart crossways through sight ramp--centered 6" from tip of barrel) Seems to have all the target options. Question: What Grips came stock on this gun? What scope was suggested? What year was it made?

It was made in 1961.
The stocks should be Diamond Targets and most likely Cokes.
Those cuts were milled in the barrel rib sometime later in it's life as it's not factory.
What scope to use is a personal choice, but back in 1961 scoping a handgun was not something commonly seen.

Barrel work

Hi, The work on this barrel was not done after it was mounted ..... Tha texture of the bluing and the stippling on the ramp and inside the crosscuts for the scope mount are factory finishes. I will try to send you some photos. Thanks for the dating of the gun.

The ramps were never stipled on a M29. They were grooved (or serrated) if that is what you are referring to. The revolver could have been refinished. Remove the stocks and check for a refinishing stamp on the grip frame.

Barrel Serrations

Hello, and thanks for the feedback.
The barrel ramp is serrated, the texture if the finish on the surface of the cutouts and the sight ramp are the same. The stippling effect is what I see with a high power loupe. The matt finish is the same inside the cutout slots (sidewalls and bottom) as is the entire slotted sight ramp. The finish of the ramp was done after the scope slots were made. The 4 milled scope base cuts on the barrel below the slots are blued inside with the exact finish as the entire gun. No rework marks under grips. I have owned a gun shop and used the services of a number of gunsmiths. The tooling for the work on this 29 seems to be factory. Photos as soon as I can figure out how to attach them. Thanks again for the dating, I have purchased correct grips.

Hello, here is a photo of the barrel. Another will follow as I can upload it. Thanks for all the info.
