S&W model 1917

This may be some help. The serials ran from 1 to 209791 between 1917 and 1946. They ended with 210782 in 1950. So, yours most likely was manufactured sometime during WW 2.
 
I was thinking that the last 1917 was made in somthing like 1918-19,then the small run of Brazil service 1917 copys in the early 30s.

S&W also built a "commercial" model 1917. Pretty much the same as the millitary version, with no "US" markings and different finish. I think they were made up till WW II started.

I would agree with radom . If your revolver is a U.S. Model of 1917 (marked as such on the butt), it was made only in the years 1917-19 . None were made for the US govt after the WWI contracts expired .
Yes , they also made commercial guns after WWI . Guns made after WWII would've had an "S" letter prefix I believe .
