Thanks

I'm no expert on Smith & Wesson revolvers, but I would say that whenever you can get a serviceable Smith in good shape for the money you paid, you've done pretty well. :)

Carried a 19 for years,66 2 1/2 inch off duty. Great weapons! Congratulations! I would recomend .38 for extended practice as mag.ammo tendes to wear on the K frames if used too much. Enjoy:D

19-5 was the 1st model with out the barrel pin or recessed chambers. It was made from 1982 --> 1987. $225 is a very good price. Most that I see have asking prices close to $400, but the selling prices are more in the $300 range.

If the holster wear at the muzzle kinda bugs you, a little cold blue will darken it up.

Good Luck...

Joe

If I'm not mistaken, the Model 19 was discontinued as of 2001 and its cousin the Model 66 was gone as of 2004 thereby marking the end of the K-Frame Magnum. $225 is a pretty good price as a Model 19 can go anywhere from $300-375.

I bought my 19 LNIB about six months ago for $430.00. They are fine revolvers. I'd say you got a very good deal!!! Enjoy:D

According to SCS&W JoeHatley is on the money.

I saw a Model 19-5 on a pawn shop shelf last year for $219. It was in similar condition. I passed it up and have regretted doing so ever since. SCS&W lists the Model 19 at $325 for Excellent, $250 for VG, $185 for Good, but you have to remember that those prices are five years old, and prior to the .357 K frame extinction. You got a deal my friend.

What's the barrel length?
Is the Hogue rubber or wood?

FYI- I have never seen a K frame S&W with a cracked forcing cone but several people on these forums have said it happened to them. I kept track and of the 5 claiming to have experienced this 4 were 19-5s. I would keep an eye on this if it were my gun.

Greeting's All-

Recently, I picked up a used (but not abused) 2.5" S&W model 66-4
.357 magnum without box or doc's for $225~!:D I think like other's have
said, anytime you can find a serviceable 19 (or 66) for only $225 you'd
better jump on it with both feet.

The -5 versions are the crush fit barrels IIRC. It has always been my opinion that the barrels were overstressed at the factory and not magnafluxed or X-rayed for damage. Shooting the defective/factory damaged ones only brings out the preexisting defect. IOWs, S&W ruined some from the factory, it isn't that uncommon. If yours has been shot and shows no signs of a cracked forcing cone, it is NOT likely to develop one. I do suggest ONLY 158 gr 38 Specials, 38 Specials +P and 357 Magnums be fed as usual. I have hunted with my 6" M19 and I shoot 180 gr Winchester Supreme black box in it then. No problems yet.

Forcing cone = first part of barrel, which acts as a funnel to guide the bullet from the cylinder to the barrel's rifling. It is right where the barrel enters the frame. A cracked forcing cone can cause significant leading of the area, which will grossly affect accuracy and cause spitting, loss of barrel/cylinder clearance and all around bad juju.

I concur with Sir William about the why of it all.

Here's a Model 19 Link.

Shemp, you got a good buy

I bought a 19-5, blued, 6" barrel, last year. Came with nice holster with two speed loaders and leather holders for them. $ 400 or so. It's a pleasure to shoot - .38 specials mostly - and I'm glad I got it. Louis of Suburban Philadelphia.
P.S. Sir William is a wealth of info on these weapons

Dang It, Sir Will. After reading your reply I checked the version on my 19 and sure enough it's a 19-5. It's like new. Hasn't been fired much. Do I sell it???
