S&W model 19 hammer change---

Would it be a lot of trouble to take a Target hammer off and replace it with
a regular hammer, if you could find one? As a last resort could one be ground
and finished to match a regular trigger?

Thanks

The Shop Manual for S&W by Kuhnhausen advises against swapping parts- but maybe it's just dumb luck, but both myself and a former PD armorer have had nothing but good luck in swapping hammers.

To grind a target hammer... those things are getting rare and quite expensive these days. I don't know that I'd do that.

In spite of many warnings, I have had pretty good luck in swapping S&W hammers, triggers, and MOST other parts within a major production change, and sometimes across major changes.

Still, knowing when you can't is as important as knowing when you can. FWIW, I agree on not grinding the hammer - those target hammers are too valuable.

I tried swapping a narrow trigger for a wide one and it was a disaster. For some reason the pull was all screwed up and felt bad. Was supposed to make it feel better! So the point is the action parts are matched at the factory despite modern techniques so there is no guarantee it will work perfectly. Won't hurt to try though, unless something odd happens like a hair trigger or pushoff or something dangerous like that.

I have swapped hammers and triggers on K and N frame S&W's with no problems. Try Brownells for a replacement hammer. Try to find a "hammer assembly" - there is a double action sear and spring pinned to the hammer that can be a bit vexing to swap the first few times. Not sure if Brownells carries an assembly though... Good luck
