S&W Model 19-4 question

I ran across a beautiful model 19-4, 4 inch barrel, nickel finish at the local gun/pawn shop and have a question if any one could help me out. It is a 19-4 model, but it not pinned, although it is recessed. I have a couple of blued model 19-4's and both are P&R. Any ideas on this strange specimen? Thanks!

S&W apparently did some test runs of non-pinned barrels in the mid to late 1970s, although most verified specimens seem to be stainless models, most commonly M60's. This has been discussed on the S&W forum. :)

Did you get the serial number? I'm wondering how late it was produced.

I'd be willing to bet your p&r models are earlier serial #s than the non-pinned model.
This happened during the transition from the -4 to -5.
It's not that uncommon.

Exactly.

I've seen pinned and unrecessed and recessed and unpinned. It just depends on when they started running out of parts that they had on hand during the transition process.

I bought one exactly like that for $400 OTD about 3 years ago. I sold it to a friend of mine. I don't regret it really, cause what are friends for. I ended up getting my fair share of good 357s anyways. Here is the one I had:
