Can anyone help me approximate the date of manufacture for this M19? The serial # is K947xxx. I think it's somewhere between 1967 and 1974? Thanks.

Can anyone tell me what a fair price would be for this 19-3 mentioned above in 98%/99% condition over the counter. Blue book says $ 265 +, but that's not always realistic. I live in SC. Thanks. I really like the gun, but don't want to get hosed. Dealer wants $ 350.00.

Dave,

I recently bought a Mod 19 with 2 1/2" barrel. It is pinned and recessed and about 98-99 %. I paid (best I can recall) $330.00 at a local gun shop plus sales tax.

The days of finding a blued P&R Smith under $300 are darn near over. You may occasionally get lucky in a pawn shop, or find a recent trade-in at a gun shop that the owner got into right, but the market's just generally way too keen on Smiths right now.

We have three different guys who wander through the shop once a week "just checkin' to see if y'all got any old Smiths in."

Thanks, Tamara. The one M19-5 I did see locally was going for $400.00. That seemed high to me, so I passed on it until I could get home and research it. I'm relatively new to firearms valuation, but it seemed high for the worn appearance externally and it was dirty internally. (Probably police trade.....carried alot, shot little/cleaned little. But didn't really understand that then) Of course, it was gone the next morning when I called. Found a shop with 3 nice 19's (online). Next morning, one was already gone. Lesson learned: I ordered the 99% 19-3 4" as soon as the place opened the next day. They have a 3 day examination/test period from the time you p/u the gun and if it isn't all that they say, you can return it. The shop has been around for a long time, so they're not a fly-by-night. Picking it up today. Paid $350.00. Seems about right after doing more research and hearing back from forum members. Thanks to all.

I've also witnessed the market on used Smiths go up in the past year or so especially. Seems to be about a $100 jump on the price of most 19's from a year ago to now. Perhaps because of gun forums spreading the word, or maybe just because they are getting more scarce....

David,

Just my opinion, but I think you did ok on the 19-3. The 400 sounded a bit high for the 19-5, but my market may be low, and I do get good deals from my shop. I think you will be very pleased with the 19, and if not, you'll be able to move it at a good price. as PsychoSword is right. The market for these guns just keeps going up. ;)

Trapshooter,
Picked up my 4" M19-3 yesterday. Ended up getting it for $ 350.00 plus shipping and FFL transfer to local dealer. Lots of eyes on it as I was filling out the paperwork in the shop. It's a 99% piece. Looks like it spent most of its time in a holster. Shoots like a dream. I'll keep the .357 use moderate and stick to 158 gr ammo on .357 use. Lot's of comments on how hard it is to find these models now from the "counter rats" @ the gun shop. One of them followed me over to the adjoining range to ask how it shot and if I liked the blue models, etc. I think he wanted to see about a trade for his M66. He kept talking up the virtues of stainless and what not. Guess I got a keeper. Thanks to all for the info! Some of the info here is redundant. Just realized it.
Guess the excitement of the new revolver took over.

Dave,

Good deal. I like my 19-5, as much as I liked my 4" 15 that was my street gun, if not more. A 99% 19-3 would be a sweet deal. and it's understandable (and expected) that there would be some counter drooling over it. It's only good manners, after all, to lust after someone else's latest hotdog handgun. :D
