Local store has one on hold for me. As you know, I gave my early 17 to my mother. She has yet to fire it, though she's gone shooting with me before.
The S&W 617 (6-shot) that I got to replace it turned out to be a less than perfect solution. It is too big and heavy for teaching people, altough it does OK for my practice (I also have a 686+).
Today I saw a newer 17 at a stor for $285. It seemed in decent enough shape. SN 95K16xx, plain black real sight, plain black partridge front, 4" HEAVY barrel (the older one had normal slightly tapered barrel). Trigger seemd, if anything, better than the older gun.
Questions are: anything to watch out for?
Worth the $285 in general? Expected accuracy? Probably year of manufacture? How hard is it to change front sight for one with orange inset? (modey/time)
