S&W Model 17-3

Just won a S&W Model 17-3 with a 6" barrel, target trigger, target hammer and target grips off gunbroker the other night!!! Can't wait for it to arrive. The only other Smith revolver I own is my beloved model 19-5 4". I own a Smith Model 41 I'm very fond of but ever since I tried bullseye with a borrowed 586 I've been bitten by the revolver bug. Now I've got a desire to build a bullseye set of revolvers - for fun. Next two guns will probably be a model 14 and model 25 from S&W.

Good for you.

This 17-3 was the first revolver I ever bought. Cost $125 brand-spanky new in 1975.

Here is my 17-3 with a 14-3 I lucked into last year. I stole the Model 14 for $500.

Now I need to find a Model 16 (K-32) to round out the group. I think it will take a long time to find a nice, affordable Model 16.

Key word right there; they are available, but it will cost.......

I found my 17-3 at a flea market - no box; daughter was selling her recently passed away dad's stuff. Wish I had more money at the time as there was a nice 1911 as well. Mine didn't have a turn line.

In case you didn't already know, yellow #4 drywall anchors make excellent and cheap "snap caps" for .22 revolvers.

Congrats on your new revolver. It seems as though some Smiths are going the same direction as Colt's recent prices. I just observed a 625-7 in .45 Colt, listed only as in good condition, sell on GunBroker for $1310.00.

I was expecting to see it sell in the range of six to seven hundred at the most.

I know from my personal experience you will always enjoy your S&W's, and I suspect a good investment. :)

At the age of 21, I bought my first S&W revolver new, a 17-3, in 1972 for $125.
Target Trigger, Hammer, Stocks.
Still have it to this day and it's an excellent shooter.

You will love your 17. I am fortunate to own a couple K22's. I didn't really need two, but when I had the opportunity to acquire the second one, I had to jump on it.

Both of these were shipped in 1948

Thanks for sharing input guys. I enjoyed the pictures too. I'll add some of mine when I get it. It's not a looker by any means. It's a shooter. It's got some bluing loss in an ugly way but I was comfortable paying what I did to get the configuration (target trigger hammer and stocks) that I wanted. Maybe I'll get some funds together next for a nice model 14 too.

Glenncal1 if you call that shooter grade then mine must in bad shape! :p wait until the end of this week. When I get it I'll show pics.

There is more wear on the gun than the picture shows, tight as a drum and accurate. I really likes the Fiocci .32 wadcutters.
